Daniel DUIC Obituary

November 23, 1964 – September 13, 2024 It is with great sadness that we announce Dan's sudden passing at the age of 59. Dan was born to Dr. Andrew and Antonia Duic on his mother's birthday in 1964, in Zagreb, Croatia. Together with older brother Marko, Dan and his family immigrated to Canada in 1967. The family quickly adapted to their new home in Toronto but never lost their profound connection to Croatia. As a child, Dan was blessed with a mop of curly brown hair and a winning smile that melted everyone's hearts. Dan developed an entrepreneurial spirit and an interest in computers early in life. After obtaining a degree in Economics and Computer Science at the University of Toronto, he pursued a career as an entrepreneur in technology. He worked hard and was proud of the companies he founded and built. He was a creative and dynamic leader, much loved by his colleagues. Dan met his wife, Lisa, in 2007. They welcomed their sons Benjamin in 2009 and Matthew in 2012. Dan marveled at his boys and was so proud of them. Following the influence of his parents, Dan encouraged their natural curiosity and love of learning to set them on their life's path. He cherished his time teaching them to play chess and sharing his love of good food and travel with them. Dan's most treasured moments were on family vacations in Longboat Key, Florida; Lošinj, Croatia; and throughout Europe and South America. Dan's departure leaves the boys with an unfillable void in their lives, but they will have wonderful memories of chess games and Sunday dim sum, learning to make their dad's famous pesto, going for rides in his little blue convertible, and swimming in the ocean with "DJ Danny D". Dan is survived by Lisa and his children Benjamin and Matthew, his parents Andrew and Antonia Duic, and his brother Marko Duic (Gabriel Lau). He will be sorely missed by his extended family members and dear friends, especially Jaime Gilbert and Mark Monaghan. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dan's memory may be made to the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada, or the Charity of Your Choice. A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 28th, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., at the Humphrey Funeral Home, A.W. Miles-Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville), Toronto. A memorial service will be held beginning at 1 p.m. A reception will follow. The pain and grief of losing you are incalculable, surpassed only by the immense love, humour, and joy you brought to our lives. Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.

I only today read of Danny's passing. I went to wish him a happy birthday, saw he hadn't logged-in since September, and immediately felt dread. He had just visited me in The Netherlands in August. Such a dear friend, we first met at U of T (both of us studied Computer Science, both were 'Timesharing Advisors'). He was so open and generous and accepting, and he visited me and my (late) husband Hans in Amsterdam on several occasions. What a gaping void his departure leaves. My deepest sympathies and condolences to his loved-ones, especially his two sons whom he always talked about so fondly.

As a neighbour, I have fond memories of watching Dan playing with his boys and partaking in family activities. Always smiling and making time to chat, he will be missed. My deepest condolences to Dan´s family and friends.
