DANIEL SHAPIRO Obituary

April 3, 1947 - January 19, 2025 After a courageous battle with cancer, Danny passed away on January 19th, with his immediate family at his side. The ensuing outpouring of love and support is a true testament to the man Danny was. Born and raised in Calgary, Danny would be the first to admit he lived a charmed life - finding lifelong satisfaction in his work, his true love, and great naches from his children and extended family. With his partner and the organizer of his life, Frieda, Danny travelled the world, treasuring every adventure and cultural experience. He was a Professor of Economics at Concordia and SFU, and Dean of the SFU Beedie School of Business. Danny - never Dr. Shapiro, always Danny - was a respected teacher, mentor and friend to his students. He was known to compose his countless papers while biking, walking the seawall and carrying on hours-long exchanges with co-collaborators. A great shmoozer, Danny gathered people to him, forming lifelong relationships with friends and colleagues around the world. Despite his many academic accomplishments, he would say that his greatest accomplishment was his two children, Jesse and Rebecca. They and their partners, Hillary and Kieran will sorely miss his kibitzing, love and presence in their lives. His grandchildren, Evi, Annie, Liam and Charlie, will always cherish their memories of Zaidie's "secret missions" that always seemed to end with ice cream. Danny was a loving and ever-present brother to Judy, Richard, and Irwin, and uncle to Noa and Tomer, Talia and Josimar, Zev and Ruth, and his warmth will be missed. He was predeceased by his parents, Archie and Charna Shapiro. The family would like to thank Drs. Ian Scott and Laurie Sehn, and the innumerable doctors and nurses at VGH for their exceptional care. Danny's sense of humour, warmth, charm and commitment to family will be missed by so many. May his memory be for a blessing. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 21st at the Schara Tzedeck in New Westminster. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BC Cancer Agency, Vancouver Jewish Family Services, or a Charity of Your Choice.

I just found out about this huge loss. Dr. Shapiro mentored me throughout my MBA executive experience in 1994 at Simon Fraser and i will always remember his dedication, passion, and desire to make help his students achieve their goals. I am so sorry, and I offer my deepest condolences to the family. I will always remember and be thankful for his kindness and love for teaching.

So sorry to hear about Danny´s untimely death. Though it has been quite a few years since we have been in touch, I have wonderful memories of time shared with Danny and Frieda at their home in Montreal and Vancouver. A particular memory- a magical snowy day in Vancouver when we were able to cross country ski on the sea wall followed by a wonderful meal at the house.
My condolences to all the family,
Joel Hillel

My most heartfelt condolences to Danny's family. I was fortunate to have spent a pivotal part of my professional career working with him at Simon Fraser University and the Beedie School of Business when he served as Dean. Danny set the bar so high in terms of his passion for work and the university community. Yet he always had time for a story or a laugh or dispensing a thoughtful piece of advice. His family was his world, and he also cared deeply about the success and well-being of his students, his colleagues, and his staff. What a legacy he leaves behind, and what a true inspiration he was and always will be for the rest of us.

Danny was a terrific academic leader, colleague and friend during my time as SFU president. His extraordinary contributions to the school of business and its students were part of his larger commitment to helping the university become a more effective instrument for advancing knowledge and building a more just and humane society. He will be missed by many, though by none more I know than by Frieda and his family. Maureen and I extend our deepest sympathies at this sad and difficult time.

I remember we were all sad to see Danny, Frieda and family pack up to go out west to Vancouver many years ago. An understandable move, but one that left all his Concordia colleagues a bit distraught (and to be frank, a bit envious...). We were losing direct access to a mentor and friend. His regular visits to Montreal were always a joyous occasion. We'll miss him now more than ever. Sincere condolences to Frieda and family.

Danny Shapiro was a welcomed addition to Simon Fraser and the Beedie School of Business. He was intelligent, considerate, collaborative and visionary. Concordia´s loss was our gain!

I never properly appreciated the term "shmoozer" until I looked it up. It Implies "someone who is good at talking to people in a friendly way, especially to get what they want." I am only familiar with the first part of that statement. I do not think there was an ulterior motive in any of my pleasant interactions with Danny. I prefer to remember him as the "shmooz" and not the "er".

Frieda, I know the void that occurs when you lose your life partner. My condolences to you and your family. May memories and time help you to heal.

I have lost a very dear friend. My favourite partner over many years at the School of Community and Public Affairs at Concordia University. A delightful, inspiring, stimulating colleague but above all a cherished friend. My love to Frieda and to Danny´s children Jesse and Rebecca. I will miss our long conversations about work, life, challenges in both and I will miss Danny´s love of shmoozing. RIP dear friend.

Danny was a good friend and a great colleague & coauthor. He was an innovative researcher and a wise mentor. We enjoyed his dry sense of humour and his optimistic attitude. It was always uplifting to be around him and we´ll miss him very much.

Dear Frieda, Jesse and Rebecca. I am thinking of you today and am there in spirit rather than in the flesh because I am out of the country. So happy memories of you both and the kids in their school days arise. Will write.

Danny was a fine scholar and mentor, with a mischievous ability to tease out academic pretension. His effort to bridge Faculties and develop new programs like the Management of Innovation were a credit to SFU, spanning Arts, Communication and other disciplines. He will be sorely missed.

Danny was a welcoming Director of the School of Community and Public Affairs at Concordia where I was a visiting professor. Many hours spent in conversation with Danny and Margie Mendell in his office which was more like an open seminars on economics and the economy. R.I.P

Oh I'm so sad to hear this today Frieda, and all Danny's family. Danny was an enormous influence in my life and beyond generous with his time, support and enthusiasm, as I know he has been for so many other people. Any time I tell the story of my career he features quite prominently, not least because he wouldn't give me a reference letter for grad school unless I swore in blood that I'd come back to Beedie to contribute what I learned....and I did, which became the root of so much of my life. We loved bringing the kids by to visit him during recent trips to Vancouver, and of course he was still offering sage advice. He leaves a big hole in so many lives, but also such a legacy of care and contribution. I'll miss him a lot and my heart is with you all.

Dear Frieda, Judy and family,
I grew up on Renfrew Ave. in Montreal and I got to know Danny through the Manolsons ( aunt and uncle and cousins) across the street. Danny often came up from Ithaca to see them. We would see Danny at many holiday dinners. My favourite story was when my mother wrote a term paper for a course she was taking at Sir George Williams University ( Concordia). The paper was due by a certain time and day, but Montreal was hit with a bad snowstorm and my mom was hesitant to drive. Danny came to the rescue and drove her and the term paper downtown. All was saved. Danny was such a good guy!
Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss. Karen Eidinger

Danny was an extraordinary mentor whose wisdom, guidance and generosity profoundly shaped my career and professional journey-and I am sure the same for many of his students and friends. Danny left an enduring impact and I will always be grateful for the invaluable lessons and time he shared with me. Danny's legacy will live in to continue to inspire me and so many others.
Sending heartfelt condolences to his family.

My sympathy to Frieda, Jesse and Rebecca and children. He spoke with such love and pride about you at the office. That he shared this with his work colleagues is testimony to Danny´s humanity. And that´s why it was such joy to work with him. His kindnesses to me were a gift for which I am always grateful.
