David BUSTON Obituary

With great sadness, we announce the passing of David John Buston, at the age of 74, following seven years with Parkinson's Disease and three years with Lewy Body Dementia. Dave leaves his wife, Wendy Northrup; daughters, Marina and Audrey; sister, Barbara; and brother, Robert (Lorraine); sisters-in-law, Julie, Tish, and Sand; and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Paul; and his brother-in-law, Chris. Born in 1949 in Chatham, Ontario, to Harry and Elizabeth (née White) Buston, the second of four children, Dave's father's career took the family to air force bases in eastern Canada and Europe in the '60s and '70s. He studied photojournalism at Algonquin College in Ottawa, which led to a storied three-decade career as a photojournalist for news organizations across the country. Dave loved being a photographer and was ideally suited to the life of a national CP photographer. His gift was his ability to capture defining moments – pictures that told the story in one brief frame. Dave covered hundreds of national and international sporting, political, and special events throughout his career. While fiercely competitive as a photojournalist, he was always ready to help others. Wendy and Dave shared 30 wonderful years of marriage after meeting on the Royal Tours to Canada and eventually settling in Calgary and starting a family. Dave shone as a proud father to Marina and Audrey. While working freelance, Dave often took on the role of stay-at-home parent, which he embraced with endless love and joy. His penchant for documentation taught Marina and Audrey at a young age to turn around smiling when Dave called their names, knowing a camera would likely be pointed in their direction. As a family, the Northrup/Bustons took many trips and shared countless laughs. Dave was warm, kind, and interested. Anyone who spoke to him for long enough would find themself captivated by Dave's stories of brushes with celebrity, escapades in Europe, and friendships forged from shared adventures, all told with his wry sense of humour and quick wit. Special thanks to everyone who supported our family, and especially to the staff at the Brentwood Care Centre who lovingly cared for Dave over the past 18 months. A Celebration of Dave's Life will be held mid-September 2024 in Calgary. Donations in Dave's honour can be made to the Calgary Health Foundation (www.calgaryhealthfoundation.ca) for programs to support the Movement Disorder Clinic. I haven't seen Dave in many years but fondly remember the time we both worked at Canadian Press in Edmonton. He was friendly and cheerful and always willing to go the extra mile. To his family, so sorry for your loss.

When I first started in the business as a rookie, I remember Dave graciously fielding some of my questions and critiques of my photos. I was sad to hear of his passing, condolences to the family.

On a trip up north covering a Royal tour for the Edmonton Journal I found my printmaker was missing a clip that was essential for the job. When I mentioned this to Dave he took a spoon from the restaurant , broke off the end and inserted it into replace the clip. It worked perfectly. Dave was always helpful and kind and I was enjoyed working next to him.

So sorry to hear of Dave´s passing. Lots of fond memories of shooting alongside him. One in particular was shooting the World Cup at Lake Louise and sharing a thermos of hot chocolate and crème de menthe I had brought.
