DAVID EVANS Obituary

DAVID HARCOMBE EVANS, MB, BS, LRCP, MRCS, FRCSC, FACS, DABU January 3, 1941- December 15, 2024 Dr. David H. Evans passed away suddenly on Sunday, December 15, 2024, leaving behind his wife, Dr. Mary Gospodarowicz; children, Margaret (Philip Graeme) and Robert (Lisa Yeates); and grandchildren, Julian and Noah in Vancouver, and Zara and Camilla in Toronto. David was born in Cardiff, Wales, to DP. Evans, BSc, DSc, PhD, CBE and Vura (nee Harcombe). He obtained MB BS degrees from the Guy's Hospital Medical School at the University of London in 1965. In 1967, he immigrated to Canada, taking up the anatomy teaching position at the University of Toronto. He was in general practice in the West End of Toronto and on staff at St. Joseph's between 1967-1970, before training in urology at the University of Toronto. After a fellowship at the Princess Margaret Hospital, he had a busy urology practice between 1977 and 2002 at the Peel Memorial Hospital in Brampton. He held several leadership positions at the Peel Memorial, including terms as Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff. He was an active member and a treasurer of SUSO - Society of Urologists of Southern Ontario, and active member of the Medico-Legal Society of Toronto where he served as President in 2015-2016. In addition to his passion for surgery, he had a lifelong interest in forensic medicine, and in 1991 he was appointed as a coroner for the Province of Ontario in Brampton. After retirement from urology, he devoted time to his second career. He served as Regional Supervising Coroner for Toronto West (2002 – 2010) at the Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario. Over the next 18 years, he held various leadership and staff positions in the Coroner's Office, serving as Investigating Coroner leading a large number of inquests, as a Supervising Coroner all over Ontario, including in Kingston, Guelph, and Thunder Bay, and as staff coroner in Toronto. He enjoyed drawing on his clinical expertise, from helping individual patients to influencing policy to improve the lives of many patients. He finally fully retired as a coroner in 2020. Known for being ever helpful to everyone who needed him, he was honoured by the Police Services Board with a Partnership Citation Award in 2007. David loved to travel, especially visiting family and friends in his beloved Wales and around the world. He particularly enjoyed lobster dinners at the Monhegan Island Inn with Mary. He was also an amateur pilot in the 1960 - 70s, famously taking Mary on a flight which he realized afterwards might have jeopardized his planned proposal, but thankfully she accepted, and they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He was an avid rugby fan and a close follower of the Formula 1 racing, following all events and celebrating each Lewis Hamilton victory. David will be immensely missed by all who knew him. His quiet and patient demeanor was also full of laughter, storytelling, jokes, and his whistling of everything from military marches to ABBA brightened the halls of many homes and hospitals. His grandchildren will remember his Mary Poppins pockets full of treats, and his endless capacity for Lego building. Known as 'Tadcu' to his grandsons, David was always keen to share his passion for aviation, WWII and movies with them. When asked a few years ago how he would like to be remembered, David wrote, "I would want to be remembered as a good husband, father and grandfather to my family. And as a good physician and surgeon who was compassionate, helpful, truthful, and always did his best for his patients." The family extends thanks to Drs. Peter Liu, Gary Newton, and Sean Balmain for looking after David's heart over the last 20 years. A small private family funeral will be held, and a larger celebration of life will be planned for Spring 2025. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, or to the heart failure program at Sinai Health Foundation.

Dear Mary,

I was greatly moved to learn from your colleague, Dr. Malik, when consulting him at PMH as part of my facial melanoma assessment, and from reading his obituary, that your wonderful and esteemed husband, David, had passed away last December.
We are priviledged and graced with knowing his lifelong personal and professional lifelong history from his obituary.
As a retired physician, now 92 years "young", Maria, I have, also, always, admired your medical leadership in oncology, as well
I was sorry to have lost personal contact with you and your family for some time now, ever since the passing of your talented pianist, your mother Wanda, who, as you know, was my mother's friend back in Poland.
I understand from Dr. Malik that you continue to take an interest with what's going at PMH
Wishing you and your family good health and continued good tiding
"serdecznie'
Michael Dales and ( now) Angela Herwin, my partner

I would like to send my condolences to Dr. Evans family as a nurse at PMH I was able to watch him at work and he was great loved hearing his rubber boots coming down the hall, and he was so kind and gentle when my father became ill I retired in 1999 and he wished me good luck in my retirement.

Dear Mary,
I am truly saddened and sorry to read of David´s passing. There is never a good time but it´s particularly hard at Christmas, and happening so suddenly must have been a terrible shock for you all.
I am so glad that I was able to be back in touch David in recent years. I was particularly fond of his gentle and kind mother. We lived next door. I enjoyed reminding David of his lethal snowballs with a hard lump of ice in the centre!
I was always in admiration of David´s great achievements. Whitchurch Grammar School has produced some greats.
Please convey my heartfelt condolences to your large and lovely family, and of course to you.
With love and deepest sympathy, Jane Martin

David was the brother I never had and sister to him from the age of 10. Our parents were the closest of friends and shared family connections throughout South Wales. Cwmafan and Port Talbot being an unbelievable source of "belongings".
We kept a close eye on our careers.Myself in education
and David in Medicine.
I´ll miss his `naughty ` sense of humour!
Thinking of his family for whom he gave all his love and care.

It was with great sadness that I heard of David's passing. I got to know David near the end of his career with the Office of the Chief Coroner, so greatly benefited from his expertise and thoughtfulness. I was always impressed how he could transition from one area of expertise to another, always working at a high level of performance. His contributions to inquests, his kind guidance during the most difficult of times, these are just some of the things I think of when I think of David.
Mary, my sincerest condolences on you and your family's loss.

Dear Mary,
I am sitting in Denver airport awaiting a flight further South passing the time reading my on line Globe and Mail. I am so sorry to read of David´s recent sudden death.
I remember him (and you)with great fondness from our shared time as residents and that great fellowship hurdle we were attempting to overcome. I particularly remember his forthrightness and followed his coroner´s career with interest always thinking "now that´s the guy for the job"
Judy and I both send our sincere sympathy to you and your children.

David helped me start my Urology practice in Brampton. He was always a true gentleman, generous with his time and a wonderful mentor. I believe his true calling was being a coroner and the spark in his eyes when regaling us with some of the stories confirmed that. He was a great leader and Chief of Urology and Surgery and was well liked by all. His rubber boots will be enshrined forever. Our hearts go out to Mary and his family. He was a wonderful man and will be missed by all who knew him

My second half-career, as Regional Supervising Coroner, in Thunder Bay, was greatly influenced and helped by David´s gentle introduction. His advice was always on point, and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting him on regular and then less regular occasions over the next ten years, until he retired in 2020.
I will miss him all the more, knowing of his departure.
My condolences to his family.
