David HICKLING Obituary

DAVID HICKLING, M.A, P.ENG. David Hickling died on February 2, 2021 at the age of 87 in Oakville, Ontario surrounded by family. He was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma a month earlier. He was born in London, UK, and educated at Felsted School and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. Between Felsted and Cambridge he served in the Royal Artillery as there was still conscription in the UK. After obtaining his Commission he was first at a Training Regiment in Oswestry and later transferred to the 51st Highland Division in Scotland. He married Elizabeth A.S. Rogers at Mereworth in Kent on 25th July 1959 and they immigrated to Canada two weeks later. He was the loving father of Richard Anderson (Julie Allen) and Heather Mary (Frank Vermaeten) and proud grandfather of Andrea, Paul, Sarah, Hannah and Matthew. He is survived by his brothers, Alan Micklem (Washington, D.C.) and Harold Anderson (Jersey, C.I.). His career in Canada was at Procor and Ecodyne in west Oakville. He was President and CEO of Ecodyne for nearly 20 years, taking early retirement in 1996. A life-long sailor, he enjoyed his later years traveling extensively with Elizabeth and playing squash, tennis and golf. They spent the winters in Naples, FL and the summers in Oakville, where they lived since 1962. Elizabeth died in 2010 after 51 happy years of marriage. Later he met Ingrid McGillivray and they enjoyed many years together, golfing and travelling. Overall he visited over 70 countries. He will be dearly missed by the McGillivray family, and his friends from the Oakville Club where he was a member for 50 years. At his request there will be no funeral or reception. In lieu of flowers he has requested that a donation be made, by those who wish, to Ian Anderson House, 430 Winston Churchill Blvd., Oakville, Ont. L6J 4Z2.

David was a great guy. David volunteered with me and our Tuesday a.m. transport group for many years. After he left our group to go to the information group he continued to pop in and say hello. Condolences to all your family. Rest in peace David.

We were saddened to learn of David's passing. I had the pleasure of working for David for over 20 years at Ecodyne. A true gentleman and well respected business leader. We enjoyed connecting and catching up in David's retirement years and the too few times we were able to have lunch in Naples. Our deepest sympathies.

David and I volunteered together on the information desk at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. I enjoyed our conversations and David's quick wit. He was a true gentleman and will be missed by his team members.

Ben was hired by David and spent many years at Ecodyne not only as a colleague but also as a friend. When David retired they met every month for lunch and this continued after Ben’s retirement as well. When Ben had a stroke four years ago David made a point of visiting us on a regular basis through those four years. He was a good friend and we enjoyed reminiscing with him and having some good laughs as well. His last visit was in November, little did we know it would be his last one. We will miss both David and Elizabeth and send our sincere condolences to their family.

David Hickling had a hearty laugh that sent one a clear message that you were at a Cambridge Dinner or a Cambridge Pub Lunch. We raise a toast to a man of loyalty, good humour and integrity.

To David's and Ingrid's Family. Yoka and I were very sad to hear that David has passed away. We have known David and Elizabeth for some thirty years as friends. David enjoyed telling the story about Yoka’s talents as real estate agent in that they asked her to find them a two-story house with four bedrooms. She found them a beautiful four-story house with two bedrooms overlooking the Sixteen Mile Creek. Can you hear David’s laugh telling that story?
For many years, I also played golf with David as members of “The Oakville Masters”.
Our condolences also go the Ingrid, David’s partner for the later years.
A donation has been made to Ian Anderson House.

David hired me at Ecodyne in 1985. He was not only a smart businessman who successfully led Ecodyne for many years, but a true Gentleman. I benefited greatly from his technical guidance, and appreciated his personal kindness. Our greatest sympathy to David's and Elizabeth's family and friends.

It is with great sadness to learn this and we send our sincere condolences to the family. David hired me in 1974 with Ecodyne and I spent my whole career there (42 years) and it was a pleasure working with him and he was a great mentor. Many great times at Ecodyne social functions and always enjoyed a good time even thru our retirement. Our prayers and condolences to the family.
