David HOWARD Obituary

DAVID E. HOWARD March 5, 1918 - January 21, 2023 Past Commodore the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, Past President the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Lieutenant (N) Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. He lived life to the fullest and he loved life. His inquisitive mind and relentless energy allowed him to be many things and although he had no formal qualification for many of them, he didn't let that stop him. He was: a businessman; lawyer; teacher; poet; sailor; carpenter; seaman; musician; leader; philanthropist; banker; golfer; investor; developer; negotiator; navigator; captain; sportsman; Olympian; architect; designer; coach; storyteller; arbitrator; inventor; craftsman; tinkerer; builder. While always: a gentleman, son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and, most importantly, a friend. Recently, he was looking forward to starring in one of his favourite poems: 'Sometime at eve when the tide is low, I shall slip my moorings and sail away. Through purple shadows that darkly trail O'er the ebbing tide of the unknown sea, And a ripple of waters to tell the tale Of a lonely voyager, sailing away To mystic isles, where at anchor lay The craft of those who had sailed before O'er the unknown sea to the unknown shore.' We would like to thank the following outstanding caregivers for their dedicated support to a difficult task where sometimes even six was not enough: Ani, Alice, Maria, Gemma, Rio, Bernadette

I remember your father as a very elegant chap. He was my mothers cousin and I believe he stayed for awhile with his parents at my grandfather Sid Howard´s house on Ellis avenue. We knew Ruth well .We were members for a year or two at the RCYC . I remember Uncle Bert and Auntie Phil too. What a wonderful age for him to have achieved!

Shannon and David,

My condolences, a wonderful man who lived a full and productive life. One of my fondest memories of him took place a number of years ago when the RCYC Heritage Committee hosted an evening celebrating an anniversary of the Canadian Navy. I brought my late father to this event and as it turned we were seated at the same table as David and the two had a great time sharing stories of their times on Corvettes.
