DAVID PHILIP HUGHES

October 29, 1951 - January 20, 2025 Born in Kroonstadt, South Africa, to Charles Durrant Hughes and Barbara Joan Hughes (nee Hunter), David immigrated to Canada with his family in 1958, settling in Winnipeg. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Pamela Susan Hughes (nee McClarty); three sons, Peter David Hughes (Britt Welter Nolan), Andrew Hunter Hughes (Helen Hughes) and Christopher Blake Hughes (Emily Hughes); and five grandchildren, Oliver, Aléfa, Russell, Fenris and Eleanor. David was predeceased by his eldest brother, Colin (Marjorie); and is survived by siblings, Richard (Noreen), Brian (Linda) and Lana Hughes. He is fondly remembered by his brothers-in-law, Blake (Sheila) and Grant (Cori) McClarty; and many nephews and nieces. David graduated from Glenlawn Collegiate in St. Vital, Winnipeg in 1968, earned a BA in English from University of Manitoba in 1971 and MA from Concordia University in Montreal in 1975. He apprenticed as a violin maker under Claude Fougerolle in Montreal from 1974 to 1976 before obtaining an LLB from University of Toronto in 1979. David practiced tax law at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP in Toronto from 1980 to 1992. He later co- founded Triam Automotive Inc. with Jim Nicol, David Copeland, Dan Chicoine and John London. Among his career highlights, David served as CEO of PowerLasers, a Triam subsidiary, where he led the development of a laser welding process for automotive and aerospace parts- a role he described as one of the happiest times of his professional life. David was a kind, gentle, humble, endlessly curious man who lived a rich and full life. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was exceptional in the depth of his intelligence and creativity, breadth of his skills and enthusiasm for taking on anything. He cherished time spent with family and had boundless energy for beach walks, cottaging, gardening, cooking, baking, woodworking, photography, skiing, hiking, kayaking, scuba diving, windsurfing and kitesurfing. He led family trips in a 4 by 4 in Southern Africa, hiking in the Sinai desert, climbing Macchu Picchu and scuba diving in cenotes in Mexico and off the coast of Madagascar. Diagnosed with dementia in 2015, David faced the challenges of his illness with courage and grace. He passed away peacefully at Baycrest surrounded by his loving family. The Hughes family extends its gratitude to Sunnybrook and Baycrest hospitals and Ewart Angus Sprint Home for the excellent care David received.
