David LANGTON Obituary

DAVID LANGTON 73, died April 12, 2021 from the complications of Alzheimer's Disease. Born and raised in Leicester, England, David came to Canada in 1974 to join the law firm, Bereskin & Parr, where he became a partner in 1978. He stayed with the firm, specializing in intellectual property, until retiring in April 2014. David loved dogs, Porsches, and his granddaughters, not necessarily in that order. He leaves behind devoted wife, Millie Waicus, and her children, Frank and Sarah; sister, Jane; children, James (Carolyn) and Clare (Dave); and his beloved granddaughters, Hannah, Ella, Ava and Fiona. Predeceased by first wife, Sue; sister, Celia; and stepson, Evan. Special thanks to the exceptionally dedicated staff at Presentation Manor who made David's final months as comfortable as possible. Due to COVID-19, a celebration of life will be held when circumstances allow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Ontario are welcomed.

David was a clever, kind and friendly colleague. He was a skilled patent agent, and a valued contributor to the IP profession in Canada through his many years of involvement with IPIC. He was popular with everyone - and his gentle humour, practical approach and fairness was a model to all those with whom he interacted. David and I shared many hours discussing home renovations and building projects. David was incredibly handy, and his pride in projects at home and in the country was obvious. He loved spending time with his grand-daughters - all parents should be lucky enough to have such a doting Grandpa in the family. We used to laugh about chocolate addictions - and how the length of the commute should govern the permissible size of the chocolate bar at the end of the day. He was lucky to spend his last years with Millie, and I'm glad they were able to share David's passion for fast cars. I thank Millie for her care for David during his illness. Alzheimer's is a cruel disease - but it forces you to remember people as they were - and I will remember David for his quiet kindness, compassion and humour. My condolences to Millie, James, Clare and all of David's family.

I was privileged to know David as both professional colleague and friend. When covering for David's agency practice on his holiday absences, I was able to see the esteem in which he was held by his colleagues throughout the world. I also saw the respect and confidence he engendered in his supporting staff throughout the firm.
As a friend, during our working life we had many discussions on work items, but also on many other topics, especially Porsches, car racing, farm house rebuilding and dogs. Many of those discussions occurred over lunch, some with suitable libations. The invitation to lunch often included the title "Ed's?". After our respective retirements, we continued our important discussions, with Millie's blessings, over lunch, with some libations, and the key word became "Black Dog".
It was concerning and sad to experience his cognitive decline, but I continue to fondly remember the lunches we had until COVID intervened.
Rest in peace my friend, and I hope you have access to a heavenly GT3.

Millie and family,

Please accept my condolences on your loss of David. He was a kind and delightful person, and I enjoyed working alongside him.

Millie, I didn't know you'd had the good fortune - and good sense - to marry David. How lucky was he; and how lucky were you.

You're in my thoughts. Put your arms around yourself and squeeze. That'll be a hug from me.

I enjoyed many pleasant lunches with David, discussing cars, fixing up farms and putting the patent World to right. He was great company, thoughtful, and showed true leadership of the IP profession in Canada during his Presidency of IPIC. He will be missed.

As neighbours for only a short time we did not get to know David as well we would have liked. Kym remembers David walking stately down the street with the family dog. At an event we attended at their home David was the consummate host making certain that everyone was well looked after. I was very fortunate that David was next door and came to help when I fell and broke my hip.
Millie, we are so sorry for what you have had to endure these last three years. Here's hoping that the future will bring you peace and contentment.
With love,
Kym and Bev

I had the pleasure of getting to know David in my role as activity assistant at Presentation Manor. He was a very interesting man and always polite. Every time I did some baking for the residents he would stand around near the kitchen with a huge grin on his face just waiting for the oven timer to go off. He would later tell me how much I was spoiling him with the baked treats. He will be definitely missed by many from our community!

It was a blessing to have David here and share our mutual love of sports cars. I know he will be driving all of his favorite Porsches in heaven.
