David McGRAW Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of David Lloyd McGraw on October 16, 2024. Predeceased by his parents, Audrey (2021) and Robert (2020) McGraw; David was the devoted husband of Mary (nee Mahoney); brother of Julia and Donna (both of Toronto); and nephew of Jeanne Guy (Hilton Head Island, SC). He will also be deeply missed by his extended family of siblings-in-law, nieces, nephews and their children. David grew up in Montreal. At the age of 11, he spent most of his summer with his friends at Expo 67. This activated his interest in travel, international politics and global affairs. He earned his Bachelor of Commerce degree from McGill University, and his MBA from the Ivey Business School, University of Western Ontario. He was a Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario and a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD.D). After graduating from McGill, David moved to Toronto and joined the chartered accountancy firm of Clarkson Gordon. After completing his MBA, he then worked in Vancouver before returning to Toronto to specialize in mergers and acquisitions in both a corporate and advisory capacity. In 2004, David became the Chief Financial Officer at Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan; a position which he held for seventeen years. During his retirement, David continued to represent Ontario Teachers' as a board member and Audit Committee Chair for several portfolio companies in Canada and internationally. David was an active member of the global Accountability for Sustainability (A4S) CFO Leadership Network (Canadian Chapter), a part of HM King Charles III Charitable Fund Group of Charities. David also served as a Board Member, The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation in Toronto. David was passionate about his devotion to family, developing people, and being a curious learner. He very much enjoyed the friendships he made at work, and on the tennis court at the Badminton and Racquet Club of Toronto, Hillsboro Club (Florida), the Royal Canadian Yacht Club (Toronto) and the Harbour Town Yacht Club (South Carolina). David's legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will always be remembered as a devoted husband, brother, nephew, uncle, teacher, mentor, master storyteller and exceptional friend. A memorial service will take place at the York Cemetery and Funeral Centre, 160 Beecroft Road, Toronto, Ontario M2N 5Z5, on Saturday, October 19, 2024. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., followed by a memorial service and reception. Special thanks to Dr. Jennifer Knox and all the caring staff at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and the Ontario Health at Home team. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Julia, Donna and Mary
My deepest sympathy and condolences on the loss of David. I am so saddened that cancer has taken such an accomplished person so early and did not permit him to live out a full and enjoyable retirement with his wife Mary. David was always such a loyal, loving and dear brother and son while balancing such a demanding career in business and financial services. I had the pleasure of knowing David in the 1980s early upon my arrival to Toronto when I met his sister Julia with whom I was a close friend over many decades. My heart goes out to the McGraw family who have suffered so much loss these past 4 years. May peace, light, music and joy return to your lives as time and memories heals this difficult grieving period. Donna Sharp

Dear Julia, Mary and Donna:

I am saddened to hear about the passing of David and to give my heart felt condolences .

Him and I spoke on the phone on a couple of occasions regarding his Grandmother and Grandfather´s gravestone in Brantford where he is a concerned and thoughtful person and wanted a new headstone since it is wearing out ( which I have noticed also). Family is important to David which I greatly admire. His support was even greatly appreciated with the passing of my parents.

I´m sure that my parents would love to hear some of his stories on "The Other Side" from being a great storyteller I hear.

Sincerely,

Andre McGraw
