MUNRO, David Aird
Died October 2, 2004 at home after a long illness. Born May 25, 1923. He was a man of great warmth, intelligence and integrity, which made him respected and admired by his colleagues and loved by his friends and family. A distinguished career in wildlife management, conversation and environment left important and lasting contributions. After war service overseas, he obtained a B.A. (Honours) Zoology at UBC and a Ph.D in Zoology and Geography at U of T. He was awarded a D. Sc. (Hon. Caus.) Acadia U. as well as conversation awards in Canada, the US and the Order of the Golden Ark (Netherlands). He served the Federal Government in the Wildlife Service; Indian Affairs & Northern Development; Fisheries; Environment. He also served at the United Nations Environment Programme in Kenya, and as Director General of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Switzerland. He is survived by his wife Andrea and his sons Ian (Sally; Kelly Ann, David, Monica, Sharry, Adam); Ross (Sharman; Laila, Evan, Alex); Neil (Elaine; Erin, Katherine) and Jamie (Lynn; Mara, Dale). The mother of his sons and first wife, Raye predeceased him. Memorial at 2 p.m. Saturday 6 November, First Memorial, Victoria.
