David ONLEY Obituary

DAVID CHARLES ONLEY It is with profound sadness, but with rejoicing hope, that the family of David Charles Onley, C.M., O.Ont, announce his sudden passing at Sunnybrook Hospital on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at the age of 72. After a brief illness, David passed peacefully surrounded by his wife, Ruth Ann and three sons, and entered his Eternal Home to meet his Lord and Saviour. David is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Ann, and will be remembered by their three sons, Jonathan (Andrea), Robert (Natasha), and Michael (Stephanie); their grandchildren - Isabelle, Isaac, Charles, Harrison, Claire and Maxwell; and by his siblings, Elaine (Allan), Richard (Sallie), Elizabeth (Jim) and Gordon (Tracy). David was predeceased by his dear granddaughter, Sarah, and parents, Gwen and Charles. Born in Midland, Ontario, David contracted polio at the age of 3, resulting in partial paralysis of his limbs, and years of childhood surgeries. David's family moved to Scarborough in order to find the necessary expert medical care required to treat his battle with polio. Using leg braces and a cane, David studied political science at the University of Toronto Scarborough (B.A., 1975), choosing the campus because it was accessible. At UTSC, he served as student council president and started the first campus radio station. David met his future wife, Ruth Ann, at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church in Toronto, marrying in 1982. Throughout his life, David met each obstacle and barrier with courage and determination. Ruth Ann was by his side at every step, supporting, encouraging, and bearing his weight when he could no longer. Whether attending his boys' hockey and baseball games, travelling, or going to the CNE, the life he and Ruth Ann built together for their family was a testament to their faith in God and love for one another in spite of all challenges. David's career began with many closed doors, as businesses were wary of hiring someone with a physical disability. Never one to give up, he forged his own path with the writing of his book, Shuttle: A Shattering Novel of Disaster in Space, in 1981, launching David into a 25 year career in radio and television. In 2007, David was appointed as the 28th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, serving as the Queen's representative until 2014, and was the first with a visible disability. He established accessibility as the overarching theme of his mandate, which he defined as "that which enables people to achieve their full potential." In 2019, he led the Ontario government's review of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disability Act (AODA), making strong recommendations towards an accessible Ontario. In 2014, David joined the University of Toronto Scarborough as a Senior Lecturer, teaching the history of the Vice Regal Office and the politics of disability. He found much joy in seeing the inclusivity and social consciousness of the young adults he taught, and continued teaching and advocating until his death. An avid lover of technology and with an endlessly curious mind, David was thrilled with the introduction of the smartphone. He was always quick to look up a new fact, share an article, and delve into a topic he found interesting, especially if it related to his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs or the Avro Arrow. Where his body had limitations, his mind soared, further reflected in the motto on his official coat of arms, Per Ardua Ad Alta, which translates, "Through Adversity to the Heights." David's quick wit, dry sense of humour, and deep faith in God will be missed by his family and friends. In his last hours, he held fast to his faith, joyfully cried out Amen, and knew he was going home to be with Jesus. David will lie in state at Queen's Park for public visitation on Saturday, January 28 and Sunday, January 29, 2023, times to be announced. A state funeral will be held at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church ,1585 Yonge Street, Toronto, at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 30, 2023. Limited public space available - details to follow. David's memorial can be found at http://morleybedford.ca/ where condolences can be made and live stream details found. Donations in David's honour may be made online at: engage.utoronto.ca/DavidOnley and https://www.armsofjesus.org/. Psalm 32:8 "The Lord says, "I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you."

To Jim and Liz,

Little did I know when David was writing "Shuttle" that his flight would carry him so far and so high.

I sensed that he was a man worth knowing and respecting forty years ago. I was proud to "see him on City-TV." Proud of him when he became our Lieutenant-Governor. I still have a lump in my throat from the funeral.

I was thinking of you both too. You knew him much more and of course grieve for him much more. I still remember the updates on the book that you mother told me. I thought it was the most exciting thing, hearing about a book in the process of being "sold" and "published".

And Dave was a great broadcaster and Lieutenant-Governor. He looked more statemanlike on his picture than most Premiers and Prime Ministers.

With sympathy to you both and to Ruth Anne.

I am expressing my sincere condolences on the recent passing of David C. Onley to Ruth Ann and his family.

I had the pleasure of meeting David and Ruth Ann Onley when they visited St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton in honour of Occupational Therapy week in his role as Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.

David spoke of inclusivity for people with disabilities in all areas of life including the workforce. He stood at the podium which took a great amount of effort and laced his talk with such knowledge and humour. He shared with humour, the time he needed to figure out how to get up from a bean bag chair with his disabilities after his City TV interview.

He is a real gentlman and I greatly applaud his day to day courage, and his many profound contributions to our society.

Thank you David and May you Rest in Peace,

Sincerely, Helena

We send out heartfelt sympathy to Mr. Onley's wife and family. Years ago, Mr. Onley interviewed me at the CITY downtown studio. He was kind and respectful and I was very appreciative that he listened and asked informed questions. His approach stood in contrast to some other reporters who I had dealt with. Years later, I was pleased that my daughter had the great opportunity to work with him at the Provincial Government. Thank you Mr. Onley for being such a great advocate and a gentleman.

Dear Ruth Ann and family,
It was a blessing to have known David. I remember meeting and getting to know David at both, The Peoples Church and Northview Community Church. When I first met David, it was his gift of that distinctive "media voice" that struck me first. What quickly followed was, his friendliness, his authenticity and his just good neighborly ways. I even had the pleasure of hearing David share a few messages from the pulpit. It was an absolute blessing to see a verse from Psalm 32 in David's obituary. It is my personal testimony Psalm. May the good Lord give the entire Onley family an extra measure of His peace and loving comfort at this difficult time. HEBREWS 3:1-3

Our hearts and prayers are with you, Ruth Ann, and the whole Onley family.
David was our best leader and advocate for disability inclusion, and yet when we saw him on the street he was down to earth, approachable and so kind. I have a special memory of hosting him at an event at Glendon College of York University. He broadcast a rally I designed to demonstrate that the campus was not accessible. He was a wonderful support and is terribly missed

David's outstanding legacy of inspiration for people with disabilities and exceptional leadership in many areas will always be remembered. I knew David through his interest in the Avro Arrow and aerospace. It was a pleasure to photograph David at Downsview in 2006 with the full-scale replica after it had been completed. David was instrumental in the project when he boldly proposed building a replica at the 30th anniversary of the Arrow in 1988. I've never forgotten how he made his way to the podium with determination at that event, just as he did at the legislature when he became Lieutenant Governor. Most of all, I'll remember his uplifting, warm personality. The many fond memories that we have help to ease our sadness at his loss as we honor his remarkable life.

My sincere condolences to Ruth Ann and the extended family. I have fond memories of Fair Havens in the summer of 2007, just before David took office. We were discussing what we should refer to him as and he assured us that no matter what title he held, at Fair Havens, he was David. He then proceeded to have scooter races with a friend of mine, who was also there that week

Dear Ruth Ann, Jonathan, Robert, Michael and families,
I was very saddened to learn of the passing of David.
I was honoured to have met David, you and the boys when I was teaching Kindergarten at Peter Secor Jr. P. S. I taught Robert and Michael.
David was an amazing, kind, wise and compassionate gentleman who advocated for those with disabilities and diversities. I remember when he was the Education Specialist on City TV, I believe and was doing a news segment on "The Last Day of School in June" many years ago. He asked me and the News crew and himself could come to Peter Secor P.S. to interview & film me dismissing my Kindergarten class on the last day of school for the summer. It was such a thrill.
I remember being invited to your house for lunch one day when you lived on Shoreview which was such a kind gesture.
I last saw you both and your family at the 50th Reunion/Closing of Peter Secor in 2012 and we had such a lovely chat......so many fond memories......
Ontario thanks you for all you did. You will be missed. R.I.P. David.
Please accept my deepest condolences, Ruth Ann, as I send hugs to you and your beautiful family.......
Love,
Debbie McQueston

Twenty years ago, Queen Elizabeth II famously reminded the world that "Grief Is the Price We Pay for Love." Watching the province, and indeed the country, instinctively put its arms around Ruth Ann and their family recalls them yet again.

The loss of someone like David, especially so unexpectedly, is a difficult thing to process. He meant so much to so many of us.

My heart and prayers go out to you and your family, Ruth Ann.
A memory: I was a childhood friend of David from public school and Heron Park Baptist Church. He shared in an article that my Dad (Jack Henson) was a mentor to him through the church Boys Club. I have followed his incredible career and commitment to making life and the world better for persons with disabilities. I remember Davids kindness to my son at Fair Havens one year, as he shared fishing hooks and bait with Josh. With deep sympathy, Jan Driedger
