David SALMERS Obituary

THE HONOURABLE JUSTICE DAVID SALMERS We are heartbroken to share that on January 23, 2022, our beloved Dave died suddenly at the age of 67 while skiing with his cherished wife of 35 years Mary Jane, daughter Gabrielle (Brett), and son Patrick (Kelly). He also leaves behind his dear sister Cathy, her sons Jamie (Deighna) and Jeffrey (Victoria), and numberless friends. He will also be sorely missed and lovingly remembered by his sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, in the Monteith clan. After practicing law in Oshawa for 20 years Dave was appointed to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, much to the pride of his parents Zen and Olga, who predeceased him. Dave was passionate about athletics and the outdoors, especially skiing. A fixture at the Brimacombe ski club and the Oshawa Golf Club, he could also be found canoe tripping in Algonquin Park, biking in Durham Forest, and relaxing at his cottage on Cameron Lake. Most recently he was looking forward to the fulfillment of his lifelong dream: spending winters skiing in British Columbia with his friends. Dave lived to spend time with his friends and family. A source of counsel and support to many, we could always rely on Dave's joie de vivre and booming laughter to remind us that life is meant to be enjoyed with those we love. A private family service will be held on January 29th, followed by a public celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations in Dave's memory would be appreciated to The Friends of Algonquin Park, The Durham Mountain Biking Association, Nature Conservancy Canada, or any other environmental cause.

It saddened me to hear of Dave's passing today. He will always be remembered as a kind gentle soul. Dave and my dad knew each other from the days of Salmer,Strike and Furlong. Dave was always so respectful to my dad. I was so proud to hear that he became a judge. Our deepest condolences to the entire family. We are truly sorry for your loss and pain. Sincerely, Antonella Sacco Diachenko

My greatest memories of Dave were his great big smile and booming laugh. He saw enjoyment in everything. We shared a house at Queen"s. We saw each other around campus until 1979 when he graduated law school. I saw him about 6 years later at a family law conference, when he shouted down a crowded hallway,
"It´s little miss hippie". I am so sad for you Cathy. He was, as you know, a great guy.

I was before Justice Salmers very early on in my legal career. He showed kindness and patience, especially to young lawyers. He was greatly admired and respected by the bar, win or lose. Forever remembered.

David was always encouraging. He could always bring a smile to your day and warm it. We were all very proud of him and his important accomplishments but he was also very humble and kind......I (Genie) will greatly miss my "Birthday Mate". We will all surely miss him.

Very sad to hear the news of Dave passing. Feeling deeply for his family. I will remember him for his contagious laugh and a true friend to my father. He also married my husband and I so I have a special spot for him in me.
I'll make sure to get my dad out skiing at Big White lots, in memory of you, Dave.

So sad to hear of Dave's passing. Have fond memories of growing up with Dave. In one of the many MCVI football game we played, Dave made the crucial block to enable me to score a touchdown after intercepting a pass. Thanks Dave for a life well lived.
