David SHEPERD Obituary
SHEPERD, David Albert November 17, 1928 - November 4, 2003
David Albert Sheperd made his final 'come about' on Tuesday, November 4, 2003 at Hospice of Martin & St. Lucie, Stuart, Florida, and set his course for the distant shore. Born in Bronxville, New York, Dave was the son of the late Howard and Lois Cotterill Sheperd and brother of the late Howard C. Jr. and Jean Putnum. In 1951, Dave graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. Active in track and field, Dave consistently broke school and conference records in the shot put and discus. His records for the shot put stood for 10 years, and the discus record was his until 1976. In 1996, he was inducted into the DePauw University Athletic Hall of Fame. Following graduation, Dave joined Corning Glass Works and held various positions in production, planning and finance. In 1968, he rose to the office of President of Corning Canada and Corning of Australia subsidiaries. In 1971, he completed the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School. After leaving Corning, he consulted on corporate turnarounds, and founded and led a number of firms headquartered in Canada. Dave was an active leader in numerous trade and community organizations, and held volunteer positions of leadership with the United Way and Chambers of Commerce. An avid sailor, he loved sailing the Great Lakes and the great oceans. Fishing was his favourite hobby, and he always enjoyed casting a line anywhere in the world. He and his family lived in Canada for 30 years. Upon his retirement in 1990, Dave and his wife Joanne moved to Dataw Island, South Carolina, and in 2000 they moved to Palm City, Florida. Dave was deeply loved and respected by his family and friends. He leaves his wife Joanne, after 51 exciting years of marriage; daughters Karen and her husband Roger Mozzo of Beaufort, South Carolina, Sandra of Peterborough, and Barbara of Toronto; four grandchildren; a niece, nephew and cousins by the dozen. We shall deeply miss Dave, a wonderful husband, father and friend. A memorial service will be held in Palm City, Florida at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions made to the Hospice of Martin & St. Lucie, 1201 SE Indian Street, Stuart, Florida 34997, would be greatly appreciated by the family. Arrangements under the direction of Forest Hills Funeral Home, Palm City, Florida (772-287-8484).
