DAVID SMITH Obituary

October 1, 1941 - February 3, 2025

It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of David William Smith (born October 1, 1941) of Toronto, Ontario, surrounded by family, on February 3, 2025, at Toronto General Hospital. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Jacquelyn Altman; his son, Colin, and daughter-in-law, Daniela; two grandchildren, Tabitha and Cordelia; his sister, Mary Ann Smith; and his four-footed family, Zigi. He was predeceased by his wife, Cheryl Essai. David was a devoted husband and father as well as a loyal friend. He was also a prominent and well-respected businessman who served as the Chair and Senior Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers, the President and CEO of Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, and as Chair of the Government of Canada's Audit committee, among other prominent appointments. Outside of work, David was always active and driven – he was an avid skier, golfer and captain of his cherished boat, Outport. His wit and humour will be missed by all, but he will live on through our cherished memories and his many contributions to others. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 at 2 p.m. at Congregation Habonim, with religious leader Eli Rubenstein and Rabbi Cantor Aviva Rajsky officiating. Shiva visits are welcome Wednesday following the service, continuing Thursday from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., as well as Friday 2-5 p.m. Prayers will be held at 8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. John's Rehab Research & Discovery Fund (foundation.sunnybrook.ca/fundraising-priorities/st-johns-rehab-program/).

Early in his CICA tenure David persuaded me to Chair the Council of Chief Execs just as Sarbanes Oxley kicked off. I don't think it is recognized what tremendous leadership he showed in putting together the Canadian response. I remember asking why we were taking such a lead and he said it was recognized that we could expedite things . Of course a big part of that was having David at the helm and it was an education working with him through those challenges.

Sincere condolences to Jaquie and the family and rest in peace David.
