So sad to learn of David's passing. He was a valued member of our book club, his observations precise, witty, and informed. I miss his gentle nature.

Dear Jean Anne and Family,
I am so sorry to learn of David's passing. He was a wonderful gentleman and a great scholar. I met him when I came Saskatchewan many years ago and on that first meeting he was kind and gracious and he continued to be over the year, including the time he spent at the Saskatchewan Institute of Public Policy. We also enjoyed his company at on Wednesday morning golf games and coffee. Canada has lost one of its best. Raymond Blake

Dear Gene Anne and family:
I met David for the first time when I attended the University of Saskatchewan in 1991-2 to do my MA in Political Studies. I have frequently remarked since that my colleagues and I did not appreciate enough the quality of the education we received at UofS, and David Smith was, of course, a big part of that. Through the years, I have read with interest his publications and have stayed in touch, particularly when he became a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Ryerson University (now TMU). He was a great scholar, a wonderful mentor, and a thoughtful critic. But most of all, he was a warm, witty, and thoughtful person. I will miss him enormously.

My condolences. As a young, fresh out of grad school, assistant professor professor at the University of Saskatchewan 30 years ago, I had the good fortune work alongside David Smith and see him as a mentor. He was a very kind and generous colleague to me, and very much a role model for simultaneously being a good teacher and a very productive academic, researcher and author. His contribution to the literature of Canadian political science is staggering for one person. Neil Freeman

I am very sorry to learn about David. As an academic book publisher I enjoyed conversations with Prof. Smith many times at the University of Saskatchewan and at academic conferences. I always highly appreciated his warmth and kind enthusiasm- despite never being directly responsible for publishing any of his many books! My sincere condolences to his family.

I was very saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Smith. I took classes from him at both the undergraduate and graduate level. He was a true gentleman academic - a giant in his field, a wonderful writer and lecturer, and he possessed a wit that knew few equals (he was very funny). He always had time for students, even to the extent of opening his home to the unruly band of grad students I was a part of, to hold seminars and feed us. And he invariably took a moment to chat with me and catch up whenever we would cross paths on campus. My deepest condolences to the family on your loss.
