David VINE Obituary

DAVID ROBERT VINE August 27, 1931 - February 7, 2023 David passed away peacefully on February 7 at Sunnybrook Veteran's Centre, where he spent his final years lost in the confusing world of dementia. It was a cruel fate for someone who relied on his intelligence and instincts his whole life. David was born in Kitchener, ON, the only child of Robert Reid Vine and Susan Eletha (Miller). He attended KCI, and then his family moved to New Brunswick where he finished high school at Saint John High School. He followed that with studies at UNB and a law degree from Dalhousie. He practiced law in Toronto for nearly 60 years and made many friends of colleagues and clients. He was awarded a Q.C. early in his career, which was a great source of pride. David served with several regiments as a young man, but his loyalty remained with the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada where he attained the rank of Major. He was also a long time member of the Toronto Board of Trade Club, gladly picking up the mic to host many club events. Always a handyman, he was as quick with his fingers as his tongue. David did renos, fixed most things, and could figure out just about any construction problem. In his early days he enjoyed boating and socializing, usually combining both. He had a unique sense of humour which left most people confounded, but smiling. His routines always included a beer and many a bartender in downtown Toronto misses his reliable presence at the rail. David lived a good life and will be missed by many, especially his wife of 30 years, Lucia Saja; and his three children, D. Martin Vine and Shirley Peterson, Robert Vine and Deirdre Norman, and Sarah Cameron and Hugh Cameron; and his stepson, David Myers and Lyndsay Myers. He also leaves his grandchildren, Jane, Dakota, Grant, Abbie and George. Heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre (LSSE & LSSW). Your kindness and tenderness in treating David gave us great comfort. David's remains will be interred at a private family ceremony in Burlington. In lieu of a funeral, go to your favourite pub and raise a glass to David.

Dave was a very supportive chum to many of us in high school. Active in radio with chums and in promoting many special social events including my dance orchestras performances as well as our special 60 year HS reunion in Saint John. My best regards to Dave´s family.

Martin, Bob, Sarah;
Sorry to hear of your dads passing. Long ago and not so far away I remember lobster boils, beer fridges, and good times; lots of learning and lessons at the Vine household!
Thoughts with you all.

Dave....R.I.P. I remember you well from your days with the QOR and the guidance I received from you which helped me grow from a young RFN of 16 as I rose the ranks to become RSM....I greatly appreciated your generosity!
