David WILKES Obituary

DAVID HOWARD WILKES December 26, 1944 - July 2, 2023 It is with great sorrow we announce the death of David, the beloved sweetheart and spouse for 60 years of Cathy (née Keele); dearly loved father of Andrew (Claudia) and Julia (Rob). He was over the moon about his two grandsons, Howie and Davey Wilkes, each of whom carries his name. He loved his job, his friends and most of all, he loved us. He was President and COO of Moss, Lawson and Co. Ltd.; Vice Chair and Director of Research Capital Corporation; a director of the Investment Dealers Association and the Canadian Depository for Securities. He was the IDA Distinction winner for Ontario in 1993. He served as Chair of the Board, Foundation Director and Trustee of his church, Humber Valley United. He was a board member of the Trillium Hospital Foundation, A Director of Big Sisters of Metro Toronto and a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. He was a quiet philanthropist for many causes. In the early 1970s, David volunteered to teach a course he called "Intelligent Investing" for the Etobicoke Board of Education's night school program. He felt that he could democratize and demystify investing and encourage participants to think about value investing. Often, there was a waiting list to attend his course, which ran for almost 25 years. He also taught his family about the pillars of a good life: save, spend, invest and share. David loved two sports; One was swimming, the other golf. He swam at lunchtime during his Bay St. career, and in the early mornings when he delivered his children to their swim team practices. He started golf as a junior, at his father's course, St. George's GC, and golfed there until he was diagnosed with fronto-temporal dementia. He also loved his winter course and his gol?ng buddies at Mission Inn Golf Club in Florida. David and Cathy travelled enthusiastically and he was proud to say that he had been to all the continents, including a trip to the Antarctic in 1996. But, David was happiest at home when there were friends and family gathered for dinners, brunches and good times. He loved to plan events, one of them included a birthday party for Cathy on the Mariposa Belle in Toronto Harbour. His laughter was spontaneous and could ?ll a room. He loved to dance - a lot. It has been a long goodbye and the family has been helped by so many during the years. We would like to thank the Baycrest team led by David's neurologist, Dr. Bill Reichman; the 4th ?oor PSWs, nurses, recreation sta?, Dr. Sara Wainberg; and his 6E team, including Donna, Isaac, Ankita, Celia, Teresa, Selvi, and Drs. Malek and Ott gave us their very best care. Two very special people were his private caregivers, Iona Davis and Cherie Rosario. They treated David like family, and we will never forget their kindness and love. Visitation will be at Turner and Porter, Butler Chapel, 4933 Dundas St. W., Toronto (between Kipling and Islington Aves.), on Monday, July 24, 2023, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The Funeral/Celebration of Life will be held at Humber Valley United Church, 76 Anglesey Blvd., Toronto, on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at 3 p.m. If desired, the family would appreciate donations to the Humber Valley Foundation, 76 Anglesey Blvd., Toronto, ON M9A 3C1, or to Baycrest's concert program, ? Dear Cathy,
My sincere condolences on the loss of your husband. Although I did not him or you personally, I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for your generosity and thoughtfulness. Every Thursday, thanks to you and David, I attend an Atrium concert at Baycrest with my aunt and uncle who are residents. It is the highlight of our week and an integral part of addressing the dementia with joy. Please accept my thanks and condolences from the bottom of my heart.

Cathy .. I just heard from the W's across the road that you lost your beautiful David and I am very sad for you and your family .. what a kind, loving, generous, fun and fun loving man he was and boy he surely loved to 'cut a rug'!

My deepest sympathies. Ralph and I met David during one of his night school investment courses. That was the beginning of a wonderful friendship with tremendous food (thank you Cathy), vibrant discussions, an annual fall road-trip with Cathy, David, and John and Mary Downing and too many more memories to list. David was a truly cherished friend. Also, it was because of his shrewd investment skills that Ralph and I were able to retire when we did - I´ll always be grateful for that. My thoughts are with you.

Cathy,

I was very sorry to read about David´s passing. You may not remember me but I designed an addition to your house back in the Middle Ages. My memory is of great fun in doing it. You and David were gracious enough to invite my wife Elizabeth and I as well as the contractor John denBroeder to dinner at the conclusion of the job. My recollection is also that you were a very fine cook.
My condolences to you and your family.

Cathy
Andy and I were so sorry to see that David had died
We haven´t seen you for many years but do remember times spent when we had our sons and the Duckering sisters got us through those early days

David was a lovely man with a kind demeanor and terrific sense of humour
We fondly remember dinners, laughter and times spent together albeit many years ago.

Andy and I send you heartfelt sympathies and condolences to your family at this most difficult time.
Warmly
Barb and Andy Scace
