Dave and I first met when he arrived at Trinity College (University of Toronto) in 1987. He soon acquired the nickname Bob Loaded, later shortened to Bobby, that we have used in correspondence with each other ever since. Dave was a great source of creativity and fun, with much cultural knowledge and an endearing habit of imagining alternate histories of our lives. We also discussed statistics and programming. I admired his indefatigable tenacity, through setbacks and subject changes, to stay the road of academia. At times I suggested working in the corporate world. Perhaps it would limit the distractions - the things that needed to get done first before the next step could be taken ! But Dave probably knew what fit him best. I am terribly saddened. Goodbye Bobby.

I've known Dave since 1987 when he first arrived at Trinity College (at University of Toronto). He soon acquired the nickname Bob Loaded, later shortened to Bobby, which we used in correspondence with each other ever since. He was an incredible source of creativity and fun with an extensive cultural knowledge and an endearing habit of reminiscing over alternate histories of our lives. We would also occasionally exchange thoughts on statistics and programming. I admired his indefatigable tenacity, through setbacks and subject changes, to stay the academic road. I suggested at times he try out the corporate world. Perhaps the demands of such a job could tune out distractions - all those other things that needed to happen first before he could work on the next step ! But he probably knew best what worked for him. I am terribly saddened. Goodbye, Bobby.

Dave and I were friends at TCS. I spent many hours chatting with him at the pit, we also played on the same football team. I remember his remarkable intellect and great humour. I lost touch after school, but remember him fondly. I send my best wishes to your family from Melbourne.

I have known David Wilson for the best part of two decades as his friend, academic co-supervisor for his Masters and Ph.D. degrees. However little he may have learned from me, I learned a great deal from him. He was brilliant, and communicated with extraordinary precision. Every word of each presentation was selected after ruling out a universe of alternatives. One of the proudest moments of my academic life was being present on stage for his PhD graduation one year ago. David was his own person. He did not fit any stereotype. Some of the things I learned from him:
Perfectionism has its merits.
The height of the hurdles matters as much as the distance run.
If a mold does not fit, you should modify it where necessary. To their credit, my colleagues at the University of Waterloo understood this.
Thank you David, for the education you gave us!

I am incredibly devastated by this loss. I have known David since as an undergraduate student he took 2 fourth-year courses with me and excelled in grades in both. Then I was fortunate enough to be picked by him to be one of his PhD thesis co-supervisors along with Dr. Don McLeish. During this time, David has taught me more than what I was able to teach him in return. He also worked for me as a Teaching Assistant for a graduate course I taught:
ACTSC 974/STAT 974. His dedication to his work as the TA for this course was also equally, magnificently exemplary. I was so fortunate to have crossed path with him, who was a superbly gentle, kind, generous, and intellectually superior and humble being. Hopefully I will be able to honour him and his work through my own work in research and teaching in days to come.
