Dean OTT Obituary

OTT, Dean
A magnificent man left the building on Friday, January 30, 1998. Dean Ott was 34 years old and had accomplished more in that short time than most people do in a lifetime. He began his career at Sunshine Theatre in Kelowna, B.C. at 14 in the scenery shop. He met and married his wife Debbie there in 1983, when he was 19. His career advanced at a great rate from Shop Supervisor at JV Theatre Productions to Stage Carpenter at Theatre Calgary, Technical Director at Alberta Theatre Projects and Project Manager at F&D Scene Changes in Calgary. Dean came to Toronto in 1990 as a Production Manager at The Canadian Stage Company and later, the Associate Producer and Director of Production. He was appointed General Manager at Young Peoples Theatre in 1996. Dean could always see everyone's potential and he began and mentored the careers of scores of theatre technicians. Dean always took the hardest road and was as selfless as any human could be. His sense of humour was gigantic and was only matched by his immense sense of responsibility, his compassion and his ability to always do the right thing. He was one of the good guys. He is loved beyond measure or words by his wife Debbie. A memorial celebration will be held on Sunday, February 8, 1998 at 5:00 p.m. at Young Peoples Theatre for all those wishing to attend. To honour his love of technical theatre, The Dean Ott Memorial Technical Director Fund has been established to continue his mentorship of aspiring theatre technicians. Contributions to this Fund should be sent to Young Peoples Theatre, 165 Front Street East, Toronto M5A 3Z4.
