Derek COHEN Obituary

Derek Michael Cohen, of Toronto, passed away peacefully, on October 11, 2024. He was born on September 24, 1941, in Pretoria, South Africa. Derek's parents, Barney and Anita, were sympathetic to and involved in anti-apartheid activities, so he was naturally inclined to the cause and spent part of his youth as a member of the African Resistance Movement. Through his activities in the ARM, he did manage to find himself in enough trouble that warranted a quick escape to London. Unable to return home, he went on to the United States, where he met and married his first wife, Marjorie, and lived in both Washington, DC, and New York City. Stateless and in exile from South Africa, Derek spent his time in America under scrutiny from the FBI and CIA. After an appeal to a sympathetic senator, Bobby Kennedy, Derek was granted a green card as one of the senator's final acts of his life. Though this could have entirely changed the trajectory of his life, by then Derek had already accepted a job at York University in Toronto and moved to Canada shortly thereafter. He was proud that he only ever held two jobs in his life: salad boy and University Professor. His two children, Sam and Sophie, were both born in Canada. In 1998, Derek married his second wife, Susan, and they enjoyed friends, family and life in Toronto until Derek died. Derek had a true passion for Shakespeare and passed that on to his many students. He was often heard quoting excerpts from various plays, something along the lines of "let me have men about me that are fat.." and would always follow up with a lesson on context. He was forever teaching and constantly correcting his children's grammar, well into their 50's. He had an extensive appreciation for fine art and literature, especially the classics, and he enjoyed listening to music. He adored his cousins and his many friends. He was also never known to turn down a nice scotch. Derek is survived by his wife, Susan, and her family (Jennifer Jeffrey and Amy Russell); his two sisters, Hazel (Robert Cohen) and Lois, and their families; his children, Sam (Nikki Marks) and Sophie (Brian Ptashnik); and his four grandchildren, Devlin, Sukey, Zoe and Talia, who were his absolute pride and joy. He was an immense presence in all our lives and will be sorely missed. A graveside service was held on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, in the Lagover Society section of Lambton Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Parkinson Canada ( 416-227-9700 or www.parkinson.ca).

Derek was a pal for more than thirty years. He was a brilliant scholar and teacher, had a fine and malicious sense of humour and was wonderful to be with. He was also the worst penny-poker player I ever encountered. I will miss him terribly.

My condolences to the family. Derek was a wonderful conversationalist and I cherish the days I spent in his company at Bethune College.

Very sad, indeed, to hear this news. I knew Derek as a friend and colleague for more than 50 years, and enjoyed his company on many, many occasions. I cherished his unerring good sense and soundness of insight on all sorts of matters, as well as his fine sense of humour. I was delighted that he accepted my invitation to serve as Undergraduate Co-ordinator back in the late 1970´s when I was serving as chair of the English Dept. at York. He was one of our `reliables´. To use a term I sometimes heard him use, he was a mensch. I will miss him. We were lucky to have had him in our lives. My condolences to his family.

Rest in Peace Derek. You were one of a kind. He always had something funny and kind to say to the staff of the English Department.
My deepest sympathy to his Dear Family.

Derek was by far one of my top 3 professors during my time at York University in undergraduate and graduate studies. His passion for Shakespeare always shined through in every lecture and seminar. He inspired his students not just to critique and think deeply but to feel. I will never forget the moments where he would read excerpts from Shakespeare plays. Derek had the best and most well suited voice for reading Shakespeare aloud. He will be greatly missed but his impact as an educator will never be forgotten. Rest in peace and may your family find comfort in your memory.

Derek was a wonderful and inspiring colleague at York University. His sense of humour and his sense of politics could not be matched. Two of my favourite memories of him are sly bits of ridicule directed at me. A lovely, lovely man.

Although I believe that I only met Derek on one occasion, I have heard his name for decades. I enjoyed reading his interesting obituary.

I am so sorry for your family´s loss.

My cousin Derek, made a stop over in Chicago, staying with my new husband and I, on his way to Washington, DC during his escape from Pretoria, in 1963. We were all in our early 20´s. It was so exciting to finally meet one of my `exotic´ South Africa relatives.
Through Derek, I came to know and love my extended S.African family, making my life so much richer for it. Sending my sympathy and love to family in Canada, Australia and Israel.

Derek was a great friend of mine for 65 years. He was furious when he suddenly arrived in London and I was away, but once together we enjoyed Chinese Dim Sum whenever in the same country together, and he loved Battenberg cake, which always surprised me. Our shared sense of humour was always a joy and I will miss the contact I had with him across the miles from Toronto to London. My fondest wishes go to all his family.
