DERWYN JONES Obituary

BISHOP DERWYN JONES The 60,000 Anglicans in the Diocese of Huron, join countless other Canadians from all walks of life in celebrating the life and faith of Derwyn Dixon Jones. Derwyn, who died on Tuesday, March 8th, 2005, in his 80th year is survived by his wife Carole, daughter Paula and her partner Pierre, son Evan, brother Leonard of Cape Breton Island, and Aunt Hazel of Winnipeg. Derwyn was a son of the Church, having grown up in a clergy family. His father, Walter, emigrated from Wales and met his future wife, Rose, while serving in the tiny parish of St. Philip's, Walters Falls. Since his Ordination to the Diaconate in 1946 and his subsequent Ordination to the Priesthood in 1947, he served as Curate in Holy Trinity, Winnipeg; Curate in All Saints, Windsor; Rector in St. Andrew Memorial, Kitchener with St. George's, New Hamburg; Associate Rector in St. Paul's Cathedral, London; Rector in Canon Davis Memorial, Sarnia; St. Barnabas, Windsor; St. Peter's, Brockville; and St James Westminster, London. Upon retirement he ser ved as Episcopal Visitor at St. Paul's Cathedral. Der wyn was a gifted musician, composer, poet, journalist and broadcaster. He loved the impact of the written, spoken and sung word! At the risk of sounding trivial, and Derwyn was never that, he had a special affection for little dogs. Friends will be received by the family from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the A. Millard George Funeral Home, 60 Ridout Street South, London. Derwyn's body will be lying In State at the Cathedral from 9:00 a.m. to service time. A celebration of the life of this remarkable man will take place at St. Paul's Cathedral, 472 Richmond Street, London on Friday, March 11th at 1:00 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to the St. Paul's Cathedral Memorial Fund, 472 Richmond Street, London, ON N6A 3E6, The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund, 80 Hayden Street, Toronto, ON M4Y 3G2 or the St. James Westminster Foundation, 115 Askin Street, London, ON N6C 1E7 'When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside; death of death, and hell's destruction, land me safe on Canaan's side.'

Dear Mrs. Jones and family,

I was so very sorry to read of Bishop Jones' passing. As a child, I attended St. Barnabas, Windsor and have the most vivid memory of during one of his sermons, him leaning down behind the pulpit and picking up his dog...as a child that was the neatest thing...and I remember too being so amazed that the dog never made a peep.

May you feel God's loving arms around you at this most difficult time.

Our deepest sympathy to the family of Bishop Derwyn Jones. Bishop Jones confirmed our children in St. Andrews Anglican Church in Tilbury and we remember many wonderful and uplifting Church Services, led by Bishop Jones, in St. Pauls Cathedral. Our prayers and thoughts are with you.
