Donald AUSTIN Obituary



AUSTIN, Donald Rodwell (Rod), B. Comm. (University of Toronto), Master in Letters (University of Pittsburgh)
On Tuesday, November 12, 2002, at Sunnybrook Hospital, in his 76th year, Rod Austin, much loved husband of Margaret McBurney and adored father of Janet Austin Pearson (Wayne Nicholas), her children Luke, Maggie and William; Nancy Austin (Christopher Appleton), their children Meredith and Daniel; and Eleanor Austin (Douglas Evans) and their children Taylor and Hilary. Also loved by his step-daughters Jay and Megan McBurney. Rod is also remembered by his former wife Margaret Fennell, his sister- in-law Shirley Austin, niece Carol Ingleton, nephews Bruce and Greg Austin, his sister-in-law Bette Bauer (Campbell) and her children Ross, Ian, Lorne, Shauna, Deborah, and George.
Rod completed his Master in Letters in 1950, and later with his brother, Bill Austin, founded Canadian Everguard Coatings Ltd. After the successful sale of this business, he spent the next 30 years of his life as a skilled and enthusiastic volunteer. He served on the board of the North Toronto YMCA, was a founder and president of Casey House Hospice, co- author of Carved in Granite (a history of the Granite Club), treasurer of the Friends of the Ontario Archives, and was for many years, a devoted member of The Arts and Letters Club of Toronto.
A Memorial Service will be held at The Arts and Letters Club, 14 Elm Street, on Friday, November 15 at 4:00 p.m. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Friends of the Ontario Archives, 77 Grenville Street, Toronto M5S 1B3; or Casey House Hospice, 9 Huntley Street, Toronto M4Y 2K8, or Central Neighbourhood House, 517 Parliament Street, Toronto M4X 1P3.

Some shout and sing And are thus remembered For a time. Others with quiet dignity Creep into hearts and minds To remain forever.
