Donald BARR Obituary

Meds, U of T, 1953 Passed away peacefully, at Hospice Georgian Triangle – Campbell House, on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, in his 95th year. Don met Elizabeth in medical school at University of Toronto, and they were married 50 years before she passed. Don embraced family: children, Janice (predeceased), Ian and Annabelle, Joan, Carol, Larry and Kathlene, Laura and Jeff; grandchildren, Beth and Clayton, James, Mary, Rhiannon and Peter, Jason, Clare, and Tighe; great-grandchildren, Joseph, and Sammy; nieces and nephews, Heather, James, Darcy, and Shep; younger brother, George (predeceased) and wife, Penny. Don served in the Navy part-time and rose to the rank of Surgeon Lieutenant, and moved from private medical practice to Director of the Ryerson Medical Clinic, where he wore many hats, including team doctor, Chairman of Health Science, Dean of Community Services, and was on the Board of Governors as well as many advisory committees over his 24+ year career. Post-retirement, he continued to serve underserviced areas as fill in MD. His love of church (St. George's and Trinity), stamps, crosswords and bridge filled his available time when not travelling the world. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Doctors Donald and Elizabeth Barr Bursary at Ryerson University (now TMU) through the tribute page.

Dr.Barr was our family doctor back in the early 60s. I developed allergies as a young child and needed was put on a regimen of allergy shots. Very scary for a wee child. I don´t remember exactly what he said to me but I do remember happily marching into his office and sticking out my arm for my needles. I would always leave with 2 suckers, one for me and one for my younger brother. My sincere condolences to you all.

Don was a very close friend of my father (Nick Hodson). It was through the friendship of Don & my dad that I got to know Don. Don was such a kind and caring man. My wife and I will miss him.

Dr. Donald Barr wasn't much older than I when he had to deliver the news that I, a Ryerson journalism almost-graduate, was expecting a baby. It hadn't been in my plans but he was kind and reassuring and the result has been a joy (mostly) for the last 62 years. Ryerson was fortunate to have this caring considerate man at the helm of its health services.

My first 'mature' physical, conducted by Dr. Barr at RPI, thanks to the invite by my late father J.D. MacFarlane, then Chair of Journalism (I was not a student there). 'JDM' valued his friendship with Donald immensely, and both shared a love of young people and the opportunity to counsel, guide, and mentor. RIP, Doctor.
