Donald Dal Bianco Obituary

Donald Joseph Dal Bianco, 89, of Waterloo, Ontario, passed away peacefully, at Grand River Hospital on February 25, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Don was a devoted father, cherished grandfather, and adored great-grandfather, who lived a full and meaningful life centered on family, hard work, and quiet kindness. Born on May 4, 1936, in Gatchell, Sudbury, ON, he was the son of Paul and Flora Dal Bianco. He proudly served in business as a Chartered Accountant and industry leader within the Senior Care sector. Past President of the Ontario Nursing Home Association (now OLTCA) and co-founder of ORCA (Ontario Retirement Communities Association). As a caring owner and operator of retirement homes and long-term care homes, he developed a great reputation and respect from his peers in the industry. Those who knew him loved him for his repertoire of jokes and his sense of humour, with an ability to make people laugh and smile. Don was also known for his generosity and love of life, especially within his family. He adored his loving wife, Libby, his kids and grandchildren, and was generous beyond measure. He was an accomplished athlete of many sports, including hockey, fishing, golf, baseball and football. Above all, he was a family man. He was the loving husband of Libby for almost 65 years. He was a devoted father to his two children: Rob (Joanie) and Janet (Tom). He delighted in his role as Nonno to three wonderful grandchildren: Josh (Carly), Carling (Matt) and Thea (Lukas); and also Nonno to two very special great-grandchildren , Kelly and Clark, whom he cherished beyond measure. His pride in his growing family was evident in every smile, story, dance and hug. Don was preceded in death by his loving parents, Paul and Flora; and his loving sister, Loretta. Don will be deeply missed, but forever remembered for the love, guidance, and generosity he gave so generously during his life.. His legacy lives on in the lives he shaped and the family he built and protected. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2026, at The Village at University Gates, at 250 Laurelwood Drive, in Waterloo, ON, in the Town Hall, and afterwards in The Ruby above. The family would like to thank the hospital, and especially the wonderful people in the emergency department and the stroke ward for their wonderful care. The family would also like to thank Schlegel Villages and Warm Embrace for the exceptional care that Don received at The Village making his final years with Libby so special. In lieu of flowers, condolences for the family or donations to WRHN Midtown (formerly Grand River Hospital) may be arranged through the funeral home at 519-745-8445 or at www.erbgood.com. Don will forever be our Husband, Dad, Nonno and Uncle - loved, respected, and remembered with grateful hearts.

Don always had the greatest smile!

There are so many great memories to mention but one of the best was staying at the Dal Bianco chalet and skiing. My late husband, Doug and myself were not expert skiers, by any means, but Don certainly made us believe that we could conquer the slopes. Always enthusiastic and encouraging ,he had us going down the black diamond runs in no time - much to our terror and to his delight !

Don and Doug played in the Southampton Tennis Club Annual Cups Day Tournament in the Men's Veteran's Doubles. Always the prankster, Don convinced Doug to make sure that they really scared their opponents, by showing up with some of their teeth blacked out. They were two of a kind!

We enjoyed many a fine meal and games of bridge at Don and Libby's beautiful lake front home in Southampton. Don was a marvelous raconteur, always making us laugh with his great stories.

Don and his son, Rob, took my son Andrew fishing when he was just about 5 years old. Years later Andrew, now a professional fishing guide, had the privilege of guiding Don and Rob at Wollaston Lake Lodge in Northern Saskatchewan. There were epic catches made that week that provided Don with many more stories to tell.

Don was a great friend to our family over many decades and he will be greatly missed by all.
