I have only heard of Prof. Hair's passing now. He was a brilliant teacher to whom I will always be grateful.

I was a student of Dr. Hair's on two occasions, once as an undergrad and again when I started my M.A. I feel that Dr. Hair was unrivalled as a teacher. He had standards, was always respectful of his students, and was a consummate academic, one who knew his subject perfectly and communicated it most effectively. I had planned to drop by his office at Western and only recently learned of this brilliant teacher's death. I am sorry that I didn't have the time to thank him personally for his contributions to my teaching and understanding of the literature he taught so enthusiastically. Dr. Hair was among the best of the many distinguished professors at Western and will be greatly missed by those who knew and admired him greatly.

Dr. Hair was one of the team of professors who taught English 20A at Western in 1969-70; he was also my tutor. He was a great gentleman and a kind and gifted teacher. He taught me how to write an academic paper. He also taught me much more: to love literature, and particularly Victorian literature, a course I took with him two years later toward my honours degree in English, and subsequently an MA. Many years later (2017) when I had retired from teaching myself, I needed a letter of reference to re-enter graduate studies. Dr. Hair remembered me and wrote what I understand was a very fine letter that secured my place. He was one of the very finest scholars and teachers I encountered in my life. I am deeply saddened by the news of his passing.
