(DECEMBER 18, 1920 DECEMBER 3, 2009) DONALD A. MACFADYEN Died suddenly at home in his favourite chair. Loving husband of Joy and father of Roderick and Genevieve. Don was educated at University of Toronto Schools. During WWII he joined the RCAF as a flying instr uctor then ser ved in Britain, becoming a squadron leader and ace night intruder pilot with 418 and 406 Squadrons. After many daring raids over enemy territory Don was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by King George VI. This was followed with a Bar on the DFC and a Distinguished Service Order. It was cited that he displayed great skill and courage, and that his example of keenness and determination was most commendable. After the war he joined Kenting Aviation and helped to develop the concept of aerial surveying for magnetic minerals. He was an executive in a number of geophysical companies, including Northway Sur vey Corp. In addition to being a pioneer in geomagnetic mapping, he was amongst the first to show the relationship between intr usives and magnetic reversals. He helped make magnetic maps common tools throughout the exploration industry. Don spent many years in South America and travelled the world on airborne geophysical business. His interests were many and diverse. He studied his family's genealogy and even travelled to Scotland in search of his roots. He earned fellowship diplomas in the Canadian and British Gemmological Associations, taught courses in gemmology and cut many beautiful gemstones. He was a perfectionist and a man of courage and integrity who will be sorely missed by his family and friends. A memorial ser vice will be held for Don at McDougall & Brown, 2900 Kingston Rd., (416) 267-4656, on Saturday, December 12. Visitation at 1, service at 2 with reception following.
