DONALD ROSS Obituary

(1932 - 2026) Donald MacBean Ross, OC, died peacefully at home, in Toronto, on January 5, 2026, surrounded by family and friends. He was 93. Born February 29, 1932, a leap year baby, he claimed to have had only 23 birthdays, so no one - including him - expected him to die this young. A brilliant investor, quiet philanthropist, and Officer of the Order of Canada, Donald leaves behind his beloved wife of 55 years, Gretchen Ross; and their deeply loved combined children, Tory Ross (Keith Gordey), David Ross (Line Forestier), Felicia Ross, Jamie White (Christine Awrey), and Lucy White (Lee Lamothe), predeceased by Frances White. Donald also leaves behind his delightful grandchildren who brought him so much joy: Ross, Lucy, Kate, Stephanie, Katherine, James, Hailey, and Aly. Donald was predeceased by his father, David MacBean Ross; his mother, Jean Winder Smith (née Anderson); brothers, Andrew and David; and his stepfather, G. Winder Smith, former headmaster of Lakefield College School. Donald was educated at Lakefield College School and at Upper Canada College and completed a BA at Trinity College at the University of Toronto. Donald's financial career began at HSBC in London, UK. In Toronto, he joined A.E. Ames & Co. and R.A. Daly & Co., later St. Lawrence Securities, and, eventually, Jones, Gable and Company, where he rose to President and then Chairman and CEO. He retired from the successor company, Leede Financial Inc., in 2025.D Donald was a valued member of many not-for-profit and corporate boards, including at Lakefield College School Foundation, Soulpepper Theatre Company, Canadian Canoe Museum, Ontario College of Art and Design Foundation, Ontario Arts Council Foundation, Fort Knox Gold Resources, Macdonald Oil Exploration Limited, and FNX Mining Company Inc. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2012. Donald and Gretchen received numerous awards for their philanthropy and volunteerism, as supporters of the National Ballet of Canada, Soulpepper Theatre Company, the Nature Conservancy of Canada, Smile Theatre, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Luminato Festival, the Royal Ontario Museum, Crow's Theatre, The Walrus Foundation, and many other lucky organizations. Thanks to all of the care workers and support staff who helped Donald and the family these past weeks. Greatest thanks to Donald's career-long assistant and family friend, Isabel Beer, and to Grady Savage for all their help. Visitations will be on Wednesday, January 14th, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Humphrey's Funeral Home, 1403 Bayview Avenue. Funeral service will be on Thursday, January 15th, at 11 a.m. at Grace Church on-the-Hill, 300 Lonsdale Road. The service will be livestreamed. For more information and to leave condolences, visit humphreymiles.com/obituaries. A private reception will be held after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Canoe Museum, the National Ballet of Canada, the LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society, or to a charity of your choice.

I had the pleasure of meeting Don through the Canadian Canoe Museum when I was Chair. That relationship led to another project, where Don was looking to set up a bursary in memory of Rob Hindson, his CEO who had a cottage on Lake Temagami. We worked together with Rob's father, Don Hindson, to create the bursary within the Temagami Foundation. My favourite story, was once the bursary was set up with criteria, we put out our first call for applications. We had eight. Those of us from the community reviewed the application and we ordered them in away that would allow the two Dons to make a decision on who would receive the bursaries. After much conversation between the two them, Don R looked at the other Don and said, let's each make a donation to cover the difference. All those applicants from that year received a Bursary. While Don presented as a bit of of a curmudgeon, I think it was a bit of an armour for him, I came. to know him as an incredibly generous and kind soul. My prayers and thoughts are with you with you Gretchen and your whole family.

Mr. Ross

Always had a quick smile and wit and supported my efforts wherever possible.

At first it was business and then a personal relationship that I cherished throughout a few of his birthdays and many of mine.

It was always a great pleasure to be in personal contact with Donald. He was also an inspiration to many of us to engage in supporting the cultural community, particularly The National Ballet of Canada. He will be greatly missed.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Gretchen and to other family members.

We met Donald, with Gretchen, at The Ballet. He inspired us since. As guests, we remember his being feted by the St. George Society for supporting every charitable and cultural cause, all while funding so many successful entrepreneurs. But, we will always remember Donald serenely addling his canoe on Lake Joseph and chasing Her Majesty on her Diamond Jubilee on the cold, rainy Thames in 2012, but even there, leading most.

Canadian artists and arts organizations have lost a beloved champion, advocate, patron and friend. Frugal to himself to be generous to others, Donald was one of a kind, embodying values - and humour - that made the world a better place.

35 years of Boats, Friends and Fish.
Lots of laughs, lots of love and many fond memories. Things that never would have been if not for Donald. He was a wonderful friend, a great mentor and someone who is always close to our hearts.
May this last great adventure be filled with more salmon than one can keep, more crab than one can eat and the calm that comes to the heart with being on the water.
Sail away Donald.
We love you.

Actions speak louder than words, and Donald was always there for us. He didn't hold back on how he saw things but you could always count on him. Raising money for early stage businesses is always a challenge but even when conditions were dire he had our backs. I owe my success in a large part to Donald Ross.He was a very good friend to me.
