Donald Stefansson Obituary

DR. DONALD A. STEFANSSON 1952-2022 Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Emily and Stefan Stefansson. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Don on Friday, March 25, 2022. He is survived by his spouse, Devika; and his son Satish; his sisters, Lillian, Roberta, Linda and Susan; his brother, Steve; his mother-in-law, Radhica; his sisters-in-law, Veta (m. Narine) and Savita; his brother-in-law, John (m. Nalini); sister Joanne (deceased). As a medical doctor he worked as a GP for 45+ years. To his patients he was caring and compassionate, often running late because every patient was listened to. To his family he was kind, reliable, supportive: but words cannot capture who he was. Don was a special human. He will be missed, but forever in our hearts. Viewing at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Friday, April 1, 2022 from 4-8 p.m. A celebration of life will be held at the Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club on Sunday, April 3, 2022 from 1-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to North York General Hospital.

Dr. Stefansson was my only physician that I discovered late in my life in 1990's. He was very caring and thorough. It was thanks to him that I overcame my divorce and prostate cancer. Only last year, while looking for new family physician, I discovered how good and rare physician and human being he was. I miss him and wish his family good health.

I just found out through Veta whom I had not seen in almost two years. And what a shock! I had not seen Dr. Stefansson in almost two years, because of the pandemic although he and I had spoke by phone a couple of times during that period.

I had been a patient of Dr. Stefansson for over 30 years and his compassion was off the charts. After every yearly physically, he would insist that I make an appointment with Veta so, he could go over the results with me. And during those meetings, he would go over every detail of my results and would also give me tips on preventative maintenance for a healthy life style. As the years progressed, whenever I visited his office, we would spend the first 15 minutes and sometimes longer, talking about our lives. He would always ask about my family and took a keen interest in how my kids were doing in school. He was also an intellectual heavy weight, and our conversations included; politics, world affairs and just about everything else.In addition, to the pictures on the wall of (Satish) his son, he would show me others that he had his in pocket. And, the glow that engulfed his face, whenever, he mentioned Satish was a sight to behold.

Satish, if you are reading this, your father was a remarkable man, he spoke about you with immense pride.

To the rest of Dr. Stefansson family including Veta, please accept our condolenses. The world has lost one of the greatest doctors and human beings.

Words fall short of expressing our sorrow for Dr. stefanson's loss. As a long term patient (for 30 years) , we knew him very well, he was one of the best family physicians in Canada.
May his soul rest in peace and may God grant us the strength to endure this great pain.

Dr. Stefansson was my family physician from the time I was 3 up until my early 20s.

His dedication to his work couldn't be anymore clearer: he spent lots of time explaining what I had been sick with, preventative measures and treatments.

He was observant and cared for his patients, and although I did not know him outside of the doctor's office, his work ethic and good moral character surely extended past the office. He was, in my opinion, the most trustful and knowledgeable doctor I've known, ever.

Rest in peace, Dr. Stefansson, and I extend my condolences to his family and loved ones.

I found out very recently, and I am still in shock. He always looked fit, active, and healthy to me. I can't believe that he is gone. He is a man that always lived his life to the fullest. He would always have stories about his trips to places that he would go to. Like travelling to Iceland. He will be missed. I am truly sorry that he is gone from this world.

I was shocked to hear about the passing of the best doctor one could ever have. Dr. Stefansson was my Doctor for about 39 years. He was patient, knowledgeable and thorough in taking care of my health issues. He would take the time to explain the benefits of proper nutrition and exercise. After having my physical each year, he would go through all the results and explain each and every to me. while drawing comparison to the result of the years before. He would write his explanation on a sheet of paper and would give me a copy. He would also make sure there are follow up appointments through the year. He was a great doctor and has left many indelible memories on the hearts of all his patients. You have served well. Rest in peace Dr. Stefansson

I am in shock, just found out today. The best Doctor that I had ever had.
I can only said it in this Poem.
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond and glint on the snow, i am the sunlight on a ripened grain, I am the gentle Autumn's rain,
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not I did not die.....
May your families find some comfort.
God Blless!!!!!

In my case, the good Doctor placed his hands upon my abdomen during a general physical examination and deftly located a slight swelling of a sort. Subsequent ultrasound testing revealed an aortic aneurysm large enough to erupt at any time. During the nine-hour repair operation, a pancreatic lesion, a seed for cancer, was discovered and removed. My sister had died from pancreatic cancer. There is utterly no question that Dr. Stefansson saved my life from two killers of life. God, I'll miss this man. The good do die young.

Dr. Steffanson was my doctor from birth til university. He was a good man. He always remembered what sports I played months in between appointments. I remember walking around his office asking questions about the diagrams of human anatomy. He would always take the time to explain it all to me.

I am a personal trainer now working with elite athletes. I still do the same thing when in the office of any health practitioner. Read all the diagrams in the office. I know my love for the science of movement started in Dr. Steffanson´s office.

My condolences to the entire family...especially Satish. I remember that your father would talk about how proud he was of you every time I was in the office. He had me convinced you were going to the Olympics. I´ve always wondered who you became. Just know your father loved you a lot.

God bless you.

Dr Stefansson was a very special kind, dedicated, hard working, thorough and caring doctor. He was my family Dr for over 38 years as well as my children and grandchildren. I trusted him totally, travelling a great distance to keep him for my Dr. He always listened, never rushing you. I watched the pictures change of his son Satish over the years. Dr Stefansson beamed as he shared stories and accomplishments of his son. When struggling with serious medical concerns, Dr Stefansson shared stories from his personal life to support. Thank you for you excellent care to your patients. The world lost a special man. Sending prayers to Dr Stefansson´s wife Devika, son Satish, Vita and family.

We will remember Don as a deeply caring soul. Our kids figure skated together so the adults spent lots of time drinking morning coffees in the lounge. My daughter split her chin one Sunday and Don whisked her off to his office to stitch her up. A kind and generous man. Our deepest condolences to Devika and Satish and family - we are so sorry for your loss

Very sad to hear of his passing! I´m not sure what year Dr. Stefansson started his practice, but I celebrated my 40th wedding anniversary last yr. and he was my family doctor many yrs. before I was married. These days it´s a rarity to be in the good care of anyone for that length of time and for that I´m truly grateful!

I´d like to share with you something I thought was absolutely delightful! He was always very professional during my visits and would rarely even crack a smile.....until one day.... (after seeing the ever changing yearly calendars of his son adorning his office walls & photos everywhere)....I asked about his son! A completely different person emerged when he spoke of his son! Pride was so evident on his face....the transformation was astonishing to the point that I almost didn´t recognize him....his face lit up and he sported a huge smile! From that day on I heard all about the many incredible accomplishments of his extremely talented son, Satish! You were well loved by your Dad and it was a beautiful thing to see how important you were to him and how you impacted his life in the best of ways! He said he´d continue to do those yrly calendars for as long as you´d let him!

My heart goes out to you Satish, your mom Devika, Veta and the whole family! He´ll always be with you in your hearts and the wonderful memories you share!

My sincere condolences to all who knew him...R.I.P.

Dr. Steffansson truly made the world a better place. He has been my doctor and my mother´s doctor since 1988. I´ve never met another physician who was like him. He was a man of few words but In the small conversations we´ve had, I´ve never doubted that my mother and myself were in the most knowledgeable and caring of hands. It is such a treasure to find a physician who truly cares and knows ones medical history so thoroughly. Over the years my mother and I have spoken amongst ourselves about how much of a gift having him as a Dr. is and how blessed we consider ourselves to be in his care. It is still unbelievable that I won´t be able to make another appointment as I just saw him last month. I wish I shared with him how much he has meant to me and our family through these years. Truly this is an unbearable loss for his family, friends and his hundreds of patients. This loss will be felt forever as Dr. Steffansson was one of a kind. May his beautiful soul Rest In Peace and may God comfort his wife, Devika, his son, Satish who was his pride and joy and all his family and friends during this painful time.

My heart is broken and the loss of Dr. Stefansson, he was my doctor since I was 5 and I am 45 now, he took care of my parents, myself, my kids and most recently my granddaughter. He came to the hospital when my 1st was born and that same year his son was born and he had a bunch of pictures in his front pocket and pulled them out to show us as he was so proud. The last few days I have been reflecting on the last 40 years and I just can't believe you are gone, I trusted you whole heartedly with the care of myself and my family. I watched my own daughter trust you whole heartedly with the care of her daughter even as her mother me offering her advice regarding issues that would come up she would be quick to let me know that she would wait till Stefansson told her it was safe to do anything regarding the care of her daughter, I realized my opinion was not welcome. I recently posted a pic of you with my granddaughter on one of her visits and caption read G.O.A.T, greatest of all time, and that you were, I already know I will never find another like you and this loss will be felt forever. You were dedicated and you worked hard, last one to leave in the evenings and the only one on Saturdays. My condolences to your family and may you rest in peace

Don was my personal physician for over 35 years. Over time and with mutual trust our appointments always ran long (much to Vita's chagrin) because our conversations went from medical to personal...family, life and his latest adventure. From the pictures on Don's office wall I literally watched Satish grow up. Don's nature was to be measured and controlled except when he spoke about Satish. Instantly his voice and demeanor were re-charged and his face virtually beaming. He couldn't help himself so without limits were his love and pride for his son Satish. In spirit and in heart Don was a true Viking. To be sure Don was an exceptional doctor...he was an even more exceptional
man. To Devika, Satish and family my sincerest condolences. Michael Anscombe

Don was my personal physician for over 35 years. I met him at the old Parkview Health Club when he was training for the World Masters Track & Field competition. Over time and with earned mutual trust our appointments always ran long (much to Vita's chagrin) as our conversations turned from medical to personal...family, life and, of course, his latest adventure or challenge. I literally watched Satish grow up from the photos on Don's office walls. I heard about the day he was born, his childhood passion for trains, his figure-skating talents, his surprise first car and his leaving home for university in B.C. Don's nature was to be measured and controlled and not inclined toward overt emotion or expression . That, however, explicitly changed whenever he spoke about Satish. His voice and demeanor instantly re-charged and his face virtually beaming. He couldn't help himself, so without limits was his love and pride for his son. Don and I had a shared Scandinavian ancestral connection, which we often talked about. And in spirit, in heart and in courage he was a true Viking. To be sure Don was an exceptional doctor...he was an even more exceptional human being. To Devika and Satish and family, my sincerest condolences. Mike Anscombe
