PETRIE, Doris Lloyd Shatford
Passed away in Toronto, on Tuesday, August 22nd, 2000, after a lengthy illness, at the age of 82. She is survived by her devoted husband Harry William Petrie, daughters Claire Walder (Atlanta) and Anne Petrie (Calgary), daughter-in-law Susan Brunner (Toronto), sons-in-law Ernst Walder and Maurice Yacowar, grandchildren Anita and Hanna Walder and Robert Petrie, sisters Claire Smith (Halifax), Mona Henley (Dartmouth) and Audrey DeMone (Dartmouth). Her son Harry Jr. died in 1987. Doris was born in Londonderry, Nova Scotia, and moved to Toronto in 1944 after her marriage to Warrant Engineer Harry Petrie. After raising her family, Doris became involved in the Etobicoke Little Theatre and went on to an outstanding professional career. She won the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Best Actress for Night Mother and the first Canadian Film Award, The Etrog, as Best Supporting Actress for Wedding in White. She appeared in the English debuts of many Michel Tremblay plays, starred in several productions of Driving Miss Daisy, many other films, radio and television dramas, and in regional theatre productions across Canada. She always maintained strong ties to the All Saints Kingsway Church of which she and her husband were founding members. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Butler Chapel, 4933 Dundas Street West, Etobicoke (between Islington and Kipling Avenues), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday. Funeral Service at All Saints Kingsway Anglican Church, 2850 Bloor Street West, on Friday, August 25th, 2000 at 1 o'clock. Cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Lakeshore Lodge (Volunteer Account).
