DOUGLAS HAMILTON BARR

DOUGLAS HAMILTON BARR obituary

DOUGLAS BARR Obituary

Douglas Hamilton Barr entered his eternal rest on February 13, 2025. He was 83, and after a long illness, died peacefully in his sleep. He was predeceased by son, Todd Barr (Kate Huband). Doug is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Lee Mink-Barr; son, Jason Mink (Ashley); daughter, Marne Wood (John Halsey); and grandchildren, Gabriel and Bella Barr; Juliana, Phoebe and Thomas Mink; Halsey, Virginia, McIver and Slade Wood. Douglas also is survived by niece, Linda McIver (Pascal Verschooris) Mario and Georgi; and his foster son, Michael Lawson. Doug was the consummate crusader for the underdog, working as a social worker, on boards of education, then as the CEO of nonprofits for 38 years. Doug first led the helm at the Children's Aid Society in Toronto, where his love for the downtrodden was honed. Next was CEO for the Canadian Cancer Society, where Doug turned his focus to spearheading the ban against smoking on airplanes. He then served as CEO of Goodwill Southern California for 17 years, taking the organization from a budget of $22 million to over $141 million and making a difference in the lives of thousands of people. Doug loved his family cottage in Ontario, Canada, where he taught his kids and then grandchildren how to paddle a canoe and water ski. He also loved travelling, mainly to the Yorkshire Dales and to France. These trips were spent soaking up local culture, art galleries, symphonies, and theatre. From an early age, Doug's faith played a leading role in his life. Doug was a member of many churches, from being a choir boy at St. Clements Anglican church in Toronto, to later years when he and his wife, Lee, were members at the Church of Our Savior in San Gabriel, California; Holy Comforter in Charlotte, NC, and, finally, Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, AL. He always loved the church and loved his Savior. After retirement, he served Anglican priests as an executive coach. Doug was an avid reader and started a men's reading group called the Pink Panthers after his love of pink shirts and ties. We all remember his intelligent sense of humour, his love of music and culture, and especially his love for the people in his life. With faith in Christ, we know that death has no sting and we will see Doug again. Donations in Doug's honour may be made to the Doug Barr Memorial Fund for Education & Job Training at Goodwill Southern California (c/o Patrick McClenahan, 342 North San Fernando Rd., Los Angeles, CA 90031) or to Jesus Online Ministries (jesusonlineministries.org/donate/)

Doug was a special friend,His life made an enormous difference. I am a deep believer his love, Spirit and legacy will live on! He treasured his family, friends and community. Have wonderful memories from water skiing when pregnant with my first daughter at his family cottage to spending hours sharing about politics , faith, social work issues and working for social justice and enjoying special events from birthdays to weddings to just lovely simple times socializing and catching up after I married my late second husband and moved back to the USA. Doug is missed and our hearts and prayers are with Lee and her family,

I knew Doug Barr as a person ahead of his time, based upon one memorable encounter. I was a lawyer helping the Native Child and Family Services of Toronto to become a fully-funded and licensed children's aid society. I met up with Doug Barr. He wholly supported the court application of the Native Child & Family Services. For him, it made more sense for there to be one children's aid society for all, enabling no distinctions or differentiation in funding or resources for children by reason of which Society was assisting them. It was an honour to listen to, and learn from, him, and discover such clear thinking. He and the late Gordon Wolfe, the Director of the Jewish Family and Child Services each came forward unreservedly to support the right of the one First Nation's agency, helping children in Toronto, to achieve full and equal status as a children's aid society. A rare moment it was, back then, for this kind of thinking and respect. Thank you Douglas Barr

I am so sad to hear of Doug´s recent death - such a life-affirming, caring being with an enormous presence. I knew Doug mostly at Blythwood School in Toronto, where, even as a young man, he lived his inclusivity, sense of fun and community-building ... bringing us all together, brightening our lives. I remember, poignantly, our final Grade 8 graduation party, where, with his inspiration, we all sang together at the top of our lungs: "When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high ..." That was Doug. I send love to his family and to him on his next voyage.
Mary Sharpe, on behalf of the Manning sisters.

Our family rented the Barr cottage for many years and we have a painting of the original cottage in our home. It always brings a smile to my face. The kind energy of Doug and the Barr family lives on.
