Douglas CLARK Obituary

DOUGLAS MCCALLUM CLARK February 19, 1938 - December 21, 2022 Doug began his career in the investment business while pursuing a passion for elite rowing. He medaled for Canada and embarked on a highly successful professional coaching career. He was named Canada's Coach of the Year and has worked with some of the top athletes in the rowing world including members of the U.S. and Canadian National Rowing Teams. He also coached crews from University of Pennsylvania, M.I.T. in Boston, Riverside Boat Club in Boston and Upper Canada College in Toronto. Doug's passion for high performance coaching was transitioned from the coach boat to the Boardroom where he had a profound impact on countless individuals. He nudged the upward trajectory of lives and careers helping many to reach lofty goals by knowing and trusting themselves. Doug leaves behind his beloved wife of over 45 years, Peggy Buchanan and her family; sisters-in-law, Claire, Patricia, and Susan Buchanan, Patricia Grichen; along with nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews; cousins, Boak Alexander, Sandra McCallum and Lady Marcia Astor; dear friend, Andrea Alexander; and many many others who were very close and dear to him. The family had a small private service and we encourage you to remember and celebrate Doug's life in your own personal way. I'm sorry to see that I've long-missed Doug's passing. I was working in the financial district (about as disconnected from actual finance as anyone could be) 15-16 years ago when I first met Doug. In a sea of disconnected and busy people, Doug was down to earth and kind and encouraged me to follow my passion in the arts - which I'm sure I wore Whitney on my sleeve. He took time out of his very busy life to coach me in my humble little journey. I scarcely had thought about where I'd be in 2 weeks, let alone in 5 or even 10 years. With his help, I was able to clearly and decidedly forge a path toward the goals he helped me set. I'm forever grateful to Doug for helping me realize the life I enjoy today. Wishing Peggy and the Clark family my heartfelt - though very late - condolences. Thanks Doug!

Doug gave so freely of his time to everyone he knew and always had something positive and encouraging to say. Doug was bigger then life and changed so many team members outlook while rowing at UCC. 50 year later I am still feeling his influence on almost everything I do. I will miss the old GOAT everyday. Thanks Doug!

Doug was such a Nice Man.
Now ad days, we are hard pressed to say a comment like that about someone. His presence alone taught me much. Thanks Doug.

Sorry to hear the news. Doug was my freshmen crew coach at Penn. I really bought into his philosophy. I had nothing but respect for the man.

Doug's coaching impact has benefited thousands over 50 years. When he was coach of the UCC rowing team in the 1970's, he taught what it took to achieve high performance. For me, it was life changing. Those same lessons translated to the corporate world and he even coached a number of my executives to achieve higher heights.
Doug was the ultimate coach. He will be missed.
