Douglas FRASER Obituary

It is with sadness we advise of the passing of Douglas Culton Fraser (1936-2024). Douglas is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Aloisia Hemma Fraser, who was by his side to the end. He is survived by his brother, David Fraser and wife, Liz (Kennedy); proud dad to his children, Judy (Stephen Morson), David (Leslie Robertson), Bruce (Lisa Semenoff); loving Papa/Tata to Jennifer (Dan), Kirsten (Jeremy), Lucas (Gwen), Peter, Joshua, Anika, Maria, Pablo, Angelica, Manny and Great Papa to Isla, Rosie and Logan. Doug fostered a deep love for nature from a young age, spending summers in Bayswater, NB, and exploring the outdoors with his brother David. While earning BSc. and MSc. degrees in geology from the University of NB, he met Hemma, whom he married shortly after. After earning a Ph.D. in geophysics at UC Berkeley, Doug joined Teck Corp. in 1966, where he revolutionized airborne geophysical exploration with his innovation of DIGHEM's helicopter-borne frequency-domain systems and the Fraser Filter algorithm. Doug later acquired DIGHEM, expanding its global footprint before selling the company and retiring. He was recognized as an honorary member of the SEG in 2015 for his contributions to exploration geophysics. Doug cherished family time, whether playing street hockey, picnicking around Lake Ontario, or skiing at their "farm" in Grey Bruce County with Hemma and his family. A wise counselor to his children and grandchildren, Doug also enjoyed discussing the economy, politics, and life over a glass of scotch with friends and family. The family will hold a funeral service with a reception to follow on August 22, 2024, 11:00 a.m. at the York Cemetery, 160 Beecroft Road, North York. Donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made to Parkinson Canada in his honour.

As a high schooler looking for a summer job I landed the best job on earth at Dighem Surveys as a shipper and driver. First job was to drive from Mississauga to Kingston in a giant pickup truck. In a torrential downpour. The next week I drove from Mississauga to Manitouwadage!!! And got flown back. I can´t tell you what a fun job this was for a 16yo. I have always remembered that job and thank people like Doug for giving young people a chance. Also Hemma treated me like her own. You are such a wonderful lady. Under the leadership of people like Doug and Don I learned so much. Thank you, may your children and their generations after them remember the greatness of their ancestors. Thomas W. Boch

Hemma,
I was heartbroken to learn of Doug's passing. I have so many happy memories of working at Dighem.
I recall how much Doug enjoyed taking part in our pizza lunches, and our barbeques. He was so appreciative of these social gatherings and we had such great times together! I fondly recollect how Doug coined the phrase, "Happy Friday everyone, it's donut time." He has left me with many sweet memories.
Rest in peace Doug.
With heartfelt sympathy, Albina Tonello

I will fondly remember the working "vacations" I had with Doug (and sometimes Hemma) in Africa and Australia....and yes, he did keep a bottle of Scotch in the bottom drawer of his desk.

My condolences to Hemma and family

Doug gave me an opportunity to work in Canada as a geophysicist. Working overseas was my dream so I can´t thank him enough for it. My condolences.

Sadly, had lost touch with Doug over the last while but have always had fond memories of working with him for over 25 years. My condolences.

I cherish the years I worked directly with Doug. I learned so much about geophysics and running a successful business, and had some fun along the way. I still find myself quoting some of Doug's simple, sensible guiding axioms, to myself and to the young geophysicists I work with. My thoughts now are with Hemma and the rest of the family.
