DOUGLAS HARRIS Obituary

(May 17, 1930 – June 30, 2025) In his 96th year, on the last day of June, with his son and daughter-in-law at his side, Doug breathed his final breath and slipped quietly away to eternal sleep. Predeceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, Isabelle (nee Bates); and by his older brother, Ralph. Proud and loving father of son, Robert, and daughter-in-law, Pajaree; and extra proud grandfather to Aiden. Born the second son of Ken and Gladys (nee Sewrey), Doug grew up on Roncesvalles Avenue and then Brule Gardens. He attended Fern Avenue Public School, Upper Canada College, and U of T for a diploma program in Institutional Management. He worked in Sales for Continental Can Company of Canada for 40 years, retiring as National Sales Manager. Posted to Vancouver, he met Isabelle, the love of his life, on a blind date and they married in 1963 after six years of dating and an eventual ultimatum. They enjoyed 50 years of marriage – travel, cruises, vacations in Florida, road trips in Europe, gourmet club dinners – before her passing in 2013. In 1967, Robert arrived, and in 1969, they bought their first house. In 1977, Dad was transferred to head office in Toronto, and they bought their second house. They raised their son there, Dad nursed his beloved wife through almost her final days there, and for his last decade hosted lunches with his close-knit group of friends there. He cheered on his grandson at hockey games and swim meets and was always eager to hear about his accomplishments in and out of the water. Dad was a kind man and always a gentleman. He loved his family and his friends, and his family and his friends will miss him very much. Family and friends may come for a visitation at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West, Toronto (South side of Bloor, two blocks East of Jane; some parking available, but subway recommended if possible), on Friday, July 11th, from 6 – 9 p.m., or to the funeral service at the Yorke Chapel the next day, Saturday, July 12th, 3 p.m. Interment beside Isabelle in the churchyard of St. Paul's Anglican Church in Roslin, Ontario, will take place on July 26th at 11:30 a.m., followed by a luncheon in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dad's memory may be made to a Charity of Your Choice. Online condolences can be made at www.turnerporter.ca
