Douglas MACADAM Obituary
Douglas "Doug" Macadam was born in 1942 in Glasgow, Scotland, to James and Elizabeth (nee Matheson) Macadam. He, his older sister, Anne, and his parents resided in Kings Park, where Doug attended Hutchesons' Grammar School. Doug's father ran a dental practice on the ground floor of their home, and he therefore had a front row seat to the profession. He went on to study dentistry like his father and his older sister at the University of Glasgow. He was awarded the prestigious James McGill-Glasgow Travel Scholarship which took him to Montreal, Canada, where he completed his studies. He realized that his heart was in Canada and decided to move to British Columbia. He set up practice as a general dentist, where he worked in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver as well as 100 Mile House. A keen squash and tennis player, Doug joined Jericho Tennis Club in the early '70s. The club held popular dances, and there - introduced by a mutual friend - he met his late wife of 50 years, Christine Macadam. He convinced her to move to Edmonton, Alberta, where he completed his degree in orthodontics and the couple married in 1972 settling in Burnaby where they had two daughters, Sheina and Lindsay. Doug set up his practice at the Royal Oak Medical Center, where he practiced for 40 years. Because of his experience at Hutchesons', he felt strongly that his girls should attend an independent school and he and Christine managed the daily commute to York House School. After about ten years of this, the couple decided that a move to Kerrisdale was in order and Doug embarked on one of the big projects of his life – building and designing a house with Werner Forster. Doug was immensely proud of this house and the family enjoyed many happy years there. Doug was always grateful for a life well lived. He believed Vancouver was the best place on Earth and lived out his last years enjoying days at Jericho. He had the opportunity to travel, with Kauai being his favourite destination. His daughters remember him for his generosity, his (slightly offside) jokes and his love of being social. He ensured his daughters had opportunity and an incredible start to life. As a result, both girls excelled. Sheina, a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, and Lindsay, a successful film and TV producer, both credit their father for providing the basis for their early start in life. He is survived by his sister, Anne Paton; his daughters, Sheina (James Elliott) and Lindsay (Jason Riley); and his grandchildren, Ethan, Charlotte, Kieran and Cameron. A service will be held at Jericho Tennis Club on May 11, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. PST for those who wish to attend.
