DOUGLAS McCUTCHEON Obituary

September 28,1942 – January 10, 2025 After 82 years of a life well lived, Doug passed away peacefully at home in Collingwood, with family by his side. Beloved husband of the late Susan (Craig) McCutcheon; cherished father of Candy (Michael Latimer) and Craig (Elizabeth). Devoted "Grandpa Doug" to Christopher and Charlie Dinnick, Aryana, Claude and Malcolm; and step-grandfather to Tori, Thomas and Caitlin Latimer. Doug is survived by his brother, Fred (Jeanne); sisters-in-law, Brenda and Margo McCutcheon, Candy Holmes; and his many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, Wallace and Eva; his brother, James; sisters, Susan and Barbara; and his infant daughter, Stephanie. Always an entrepreneur, Doug was best known for starting Great Lakes Helicopters and then Rosedale Livery, an international car service. A passion for guns lead to many years spent as a member on the Canadian Skeet Shooting Team winning a World Cup Silver Medal in 1995 and Bronze Medal in the 1998 Pan American Games. Having lived four years in Nassau, Bahamas, with Candy and Craig in the late-70's, Doug and Susan made lifelong friends and were known to frequently stay in "The Dougout" for their many fun filled visits. In 2017, Doug reconnected with the second love of his life, Jennifer Rogers. With their two dogs and one cat, they enjoyed his later years at his cottage at Big Bay Point, Lake Simcoe, and their home in Collingwood, ON, where Doug was amazed by the "lack of traffic." To quote Jennifer, "Douglas Vining Northcott McCutcheon lived life large, set an example for inner goodness that was a beacon, and left on the same terms." Thank you for the outpouring of love and memories, Doug will be well missed by all his many friends and the extended McCutcheon, Craig, Rogers and McIntosh families, and of course, Johnnie Walker. "Keep Walking." A celebration of Doug's life will be held in the spring/summer. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital Foundation: cgmhf.com/memorial-gifts, 705-444-8645.

I was fortunate enough to compete many years with Doug at the Canadian Nationals, always a gentleman and a mentor. I especially enjoyed his company at our annual meetings where his wit and wisdom often shined.
My sincere condolences to the family.

I met Doug and Susan 47 years ago when I was living in Nassau, Bahamas, carpooling our kids to school, taking trips together and boating in the Exumas. The last time I saw Doug was in Toronto at a memorial for another dear Nassau friend, Don Kester. It is with such sadness that I received the news tonight of his passing a month ago, and my heart goes out to Jennifer, Candy, Craig and many other family members and friends who have lost such a special man. Doug was a rare being, so engaged with those he met on his journey through life, always approaching his experiences with a sense of humour, extremely generous and helpful to others, and humble about the many ways he impacted positively on so many people´s lives. The expression "to know him is to love him" was made for Doug....a huggable lovable teddy bear who will be missed by all those lucky enough to have known him. My love and condolences to Candy and Craig and their families. Your Dad was one in a million. With love, Susan

Uncle Doug was like a father to me as I navigated the Boarding School days at SAC... he and Sue welcomed me into their homes and made the Canadian Winters more bearable as Craig and Candy kept me in mischief... He was a real life Paddington Bear - and his caring disposition was always at the forefront. He will be missed by all - and I will always be thankful that he was in my life.

Doug not only "owned the room" he lit it up. He knew how to be a good friend, and his friendship was cherished by Dad and Gia. We all benefitted from being within that friendship circle. Sincere condolences to all his family,

It is with great sadness that we learned of Doug´s passing. Jon first met Doug and Susan on the 1960 UTS European trip and survived being a chemistry lab partner of Doug´s in Grade 13 at UTS. We met up again with Doug and Susan twenty years ago when we bought our place on Big Bay Point. They made us feel welcome and we wisely followed their suggestion that we join Big Bay Point Golf Course. Along with everyone in the Big Bay Point community, we will greatly miss Doug.

Doug was a talented and affable guy, very generous with his privileges and often doing the unexpected. I remember at one if his parties in high school in the '50s he introduced everyone to the then new Polaroid instant camera and gave many of us an astonishing instant photo of ourselves. My sympathy to his family.
