Douglas PITTET Obituary

DOUGLAS PITTET Douglas Pittet of Thornbury passed away at the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital on Friday, July 9, 2021, at the age of 89. Doug was born to Swiss parents in Montreal and attended elementary school in Shawinigan, Quebec, and high school in both Shawinigan and Lausanne, Switzerland. After high school one of his first jobs was deckhand on an ocean freighter running between Quebec and South America. He later followed a friend, hopping on a train and heading to St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia. During his university years he became a sub-lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve. From St. FX he entered Dalhousie Law School, graduating in 1957. In 1958 Doug married his beloved Barbara (nee Leim) in her home town of St. Andrews, New Brunswick. They had a full life together raising their family in Halifax, Toronto, and Montreal. They eventually settled at their beautiful farm property outside of Thornbury. Doug was interested in the world and knew Canadian history and politics inside out. He loved the local countryside, enjoyed sailing, kept bees, and planted many, many trees during his life. He had only kind words for people. He was so loving with children and pets. A gracious, unassuming, loving, playful, gentle man. He is dearly missed by wife Barbara, daughters Peggy Humphreys (Brendan) and Jennifer Pittet, son and daughter-in-law Bruce and Jane Pittet, his granddaughters Alex and Maddie Pittet, brother-in-law Sandy Leim, and cousins Claire and Alain Guignard. Predeceased by sister-in-law Murrin Leim. Cremation has taken place and Doug's life will be celebrated in the coming weeks by friends and family. As your expression of sympathy, donations to either the Bruce Trail Conservancy or Diabetes Canada would be appreciated and can be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON N4L 1B9 to whom arrangements have been entrusted. www.fergusonfuneralhomes.ca

In our experience, Doug was what the obituary says - a gracious, unassuming, gentle man. I would add intelligent. You all will miss him.
