Eddie SHACK Obituary

EDDIE SHACK February 11 1937- July 25 2020 Larger than life, Eddie passed away at North York General after a valiant battle with Cancer. A family man who loved his wife Norma of 58 years and his children Catherine Ralph (Warren Ralph) and James Shack. Born in Sudbury to William Shack and Lena Shack (Tataryn) of Ukrainian descent. Predeceased by sister Mary Woitowich (January 2, 1933 to January 10, 2004). He started his adult life at the age of 14 when he left his parents' home in Sudbury to play Jr. Hockey in Guelph. He was uneducated but industrious with an incredible work ethic. He drove a coal truck and sold hats from the Biltmore Hat Co., bought and sold cars to subsidize his $20 a week salary with the Guelph Biltmores. From there, he went to Providence R.I. Reds and then on to the New York Rangers. He was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs and was fortunate to come to a team with many great players. That team went on to win 4 Stanley Cups! Eddie scored the Stanley Cup winning goal in 1963. His NHL career spanned 17 years and also included stints in Boston, LA, Buffalo, Pittsburgh and ending his career back in Toronto. From very humble roots and without a formal education, Ed's street smarts and his genuine friendly nature allowed him to excel in numerous business ventures both during and after retiring from hockey. He ran Hockey schools both in LA and in Toronto and one of his star pupils was Canadian Olympian Cassie Campbell-Pascal, who is Norma's second cousin. Ed's second love was golf which he played 6 days a week and he even built a golf course with partners Jerry Ublansky, Bob Watson and Dave Creighton. Mr. "Entertainer" who had a "Nose for value" also went on to star in numerous commercials including Esso, Journey's End Hotel, Schick razors and was known as Mr. Pop Shoppe. For several years, he also sold Christmas trees and donated a portion of every tree sold to SickKids Hospital in Toronto. Ed was very proud to receive the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his vast community service and Charity work in 2012. He loved life and people, was always positive and non-judgmental. Never without a sharpie in his pocket, he would always indulge any fan with an autograph. A note to everyone in heaven- Clear the track, here comes Shack! Our family will always be grateful to Dr. Daphna Grossman and the Palliative Care team at North York General. Special thanks to Drs. Robert and Carol Brock, Drs. Charles Knapp, Stéphane Laframboise and their daughters Charlotte and Véronique who were always there for us. In accordance with the present Covid-19 situation, there will be no visitation nor funeral service. There will be a private family interment at a later date. Cremation and arrangements through the Morley Bedford Funeral Home (www.morleybedford.ca). In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Palliative Care program at North York General Hospital Foundation www.nyghfoundation.ca or by calling 416-756-6944. Mr. Shack was such a nice man. I remember when his son and daughter started at Battle of Ridgeway school just outside Stevensville. He signed autographs while also settling in his children who I recall were shy, but kind and sweet. It couldn't have been easy for them to have a famous dad. Later Mr. Shack was the face of The Pop Shoppe. Excellent product. Low sugar, great taste, and the forerunner of successful recycling practices much like Brewers Retail. In many ways, Mr. Shack was a credit to Canada; a second generation Ukrainian Canadian who was also a great athlete, brand representative, and caring family person.

I had the privilege of meeting the Shacks, while working for a utility company in 2007, and the utility box was in the front garden of Mr and Mrs Shacks home, Mrs Shack was quite displeased, I had to rip up that nice hedge, and let it be known, On the Second visit to the property, we had no idea, who owned the home, Mrs Shack, opened the front door, voicing her opinion, when all of a sudden a big guy walks up the sloped driveway, talking on the phone, walking towards me, with shorts on and a muscle shirt, i'm thinking "great, what a way to start the day" when it dawned on me, " Clear the track here comes Shack" I said it, he hung up the phone, took me into the garage, Maple Leaf Emblem, painted into the middle of the garage floor, He said Norma won't let me drink beer in the house, but would you like a glass of red wine, which I did, I asked about the famous St. Louis Blues picture, he told me what that was all about, He told me about the stories of the Montreal Canadians, Hilarious, But, to top it off, Norma and Ed, had my phone number, Norma called me the one day, after the work, and the promise of taking care of Mrs Shacks garden, could you drop by the house, Eddy wants to see you, I dropped by a few days later, Mr. Shack, the Entertainer, personally, had 2 pictures, which he framed, and autograph personally for me, Both the Shacks are very incredible people, I thank them very much to just have a few meetings and feel like I was friends for life,
Very Sorry for your loss Norma and family, and all Hockey fans, what a great guy,

Growing up I loved watching hockey......the Maple Leafs. The highlight for me was watching Eddie Shack play.

A few years went by and I met him in person. He was doing at promo for a location that sold pool tables. My parents were purchasing a table and Eddie Shack was there. He was absolutely amazing..... he asked if I wanted to play a game of pool. His humour was on ice and off the ice. I also remember the Maple leaf Dune Buggy sitting in the parking lot.

I was very fortunate to get some time with Mr Shack ( he hated that) I enjoyed just spending time with him

My brother wanted his sweater and Eddie said it would be 200 dollars
I said no problem as my brother had was willing to pay
After about 4 visits Eddie showed up with the the sweater nd he won’t take anything for it
I was upset but he refused
My brother sent him something from the Yukon after
I can’t say what it was but we had a few lAughs and Eddie always asked about my brother

I Can only say that I am glad to have met “Mr Shack” and I will have some fond memories
