COKER, Mrs. Edith (nee Williams)
Beloved wife, best friend and companion of John Coker for over 58 years, passed away at Belmont House on May 28, 2005. She was predeceased by her four brothers and two sisters. During World War II, after serving as an ambulance driver during the London Blitz, she transferred to the O.S.S. and, thereafter, served as a Cadet Ensign in the Women's Transport Service (F.A.N.Y.) in the Far East, where she met John in Macassar, Dutch East Indies. She and he began married life in 1947 in London (England), later moving successively to New York, Kingston (Jamaica), New York again, Oakville, San Juan (Puerto Rico), Toronto, Munich, London again, Montreal and finally Toronto again. Whilst resident in Jamaica she served actively on Lady Foot's Committee to improve the lot of local women. Edith was always keenly interested in sports (pre War she played country tennis and field hockey), and was a lifelong lover of animals, especially horses, dogs and cats. Cremation arrangements by Trull Funeral Home (Yonge Street). Appreciation of palliative care by Dr. B. Birmingham (Medical Director, Belmont House) and others concerned therewith is hereby recorded as is the devoted care, over the years, of Aki and Cora. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may please be made to the O.S.P.C.A. and The Toronto Humane Society. Friends may call at the TRULL 'NORTH TORONTO' FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTRE, 2704 Yonge Street (5 blocks south of Lawrence), (416) 488-1101, on Tuesday, June 7th for a memorial service that will be held in the chapel at 3 p.m.
