Edward CLARKE Obituary

EDWARD ARTHUR CLARKE February 11, 1931 - April 13, 2022 Edward "Ed" Arthur Clarke passed away in the early morning on Wednesday, April 13, 2022. Ed was born on February 11, 1931 in Sarnia, Ontario to John "Jack" and Clara "Tate" Clarke. After growing up in Sarnia, he attended the University of Toronto where received a Bachelor's degree in Management, though he was most proud of his certification as a Cabinet Maker. He worked several years for Sears Canada in small towns in southern Ontario and the Ontario Development Corporation. During this time he met, fell in love with, and married Elizabeth "Betty" Jean Riddell. They eventually settled in Hamilton and then Burlington, Ontario and had three sons: Bruce (Ramona), Brian (Kim) and Paul. In 1973 the Clarkes moved to Ponoka, Alberta where Ed was the inaugural managing director for the Alberta Opportunity Company. After leaving the AOC, Ed ran his own venture finance and management consulting company for several years before eventually retiring. He served on the Golf Club Board of Directors and during his retirement, he helped Jim Hamilton fundraise for the Ponoka Skateboard Park. Though he tried to cultivate a reputation as a curmudgeon, Ed was greatly loved and is survived by his wife, Betty; sons, Bruce, Brian, and Paul;Brian's wife, Kim; and Ed's grandchildren, Duncan, Em, Rhyann and Jillian. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Old McDonald's Kennel or the Town of Ponoka Trail System. A Memorial Service to celebrate Ed's life was held at the Ponoka Funeral Home, Ponoka, Alberta at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2022. My deepest sympathies to the entire family. I was lucky enough to get to know Ed and Betty when I spent a summer out west and they opened their home to me. I have very fond memories of my times there. Ed will be missed by many.
