Edward CRONKITE Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Ted. He was born on July 25, 1935, in Saskatoon to Rose and Fred Cronkite, the third of eight children. He met the captivating Carol Tubb and they married in 1958. All four of their children were born in Saskatoon and friendships forged in those early years became lifelong friendships. Ted's job with the Bay took the family to Winnipeg in 1967, and then to Montreal in 1969. Cherished Christmas visits to Saskatoon to visit family and friends continued long after these moves. Ted was classy but humble. He enjoyed working as a shoe buyer for the Bay as it tapped into his easy going nature and ability to listen to and work effectively with people. This led to strong relationships and connections in the shoe trade. He and Carol kept busy keeping an eye on their children but also found time to enjoy square dancing, bridge, cross country skiing and entertaining friends. Ted and Carol moved to Toronto in 1983, and Ted retired from the Bay after working there for 30 years. After retirement he started a shoe import business which he thoroughly enjoyed and which required extensive travel abroad. Growing up, Ted's sister nicknamed him Mr. Nice. He was the consummate gentleman and congenial conversationalist. His spirit and zest for life left a lasting impact on everyone he met. Ted's genuine concern and interest in others wasn't limited to family but extended to friends and acquaintances including people who he only briefly encountered. He was a fashion model in his early years and some would say he still presented his stylish look well into his later years. Many have observed and passed on that he was easy on the eyes. Ted's compassionate nature was on full display when he stopped working to take care of Carol when she was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2005. Carol required full time care and Ted provided that in the comfort of their home without hesitancy. His loving nature did not go unnoticed and he was well-rewarded when he met Susan Hillery. He spent the last chapter of his life happily with her, enjoying pub nights, the symphony, bridge games, and barbecues with family and friends. Their calendar was always full. Ted will be sadly missed by Susan and her family; sisters, Marge, Pat and Kathy; children, Clint (Linda), Lori (Rod), Doug (Linda) and David (Lyne); grandchildren, Patrick (Bri), Erica (Alex), Gregory (Claudia), Alex (Heather), Andrew (Emily), Lindsay, Austin, Boeden and Carody; great-grandchildren, Scarlett, Henry, Daphne and Rosalind; and many nieces and nephews. Ted wanted to have a small family gathering at his gravesite and we will respect his wish. Butler Funeral Home, 424 Niagara St., St. Catharines, ON, entrusted with private arrangements.
