Edward HEYLAND Obituary

EDWARD BRUCE HEYLAND 1936 - 2023 Bruce, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died peacefully with his family by his side on the morning of February 20, 2023, following a brief illness. Bruce leaves Donna Marie (nee Spence) his loving wife of 62 years; daughter, Beth Wanlin; her partner, Les Nagy; granddaughters, Hannah and Grace Wanlin; son, Timothy Heyland; and daughter-in-law, Jennifer Heyland; grandson, Thomas, and granddaughter, Isabel Heyland. Bruce was also cherished by his sister-in-law, Margaret Heyland; and her sons, Geoff (Lynn), Brian (Sue) and Andrew Heyland; as well as by the Raal/Wasserfall/Thompson family, Anne, Nadine, Stewart, Zack and Carmen (South Africa), Louise (Ottawa) William and Natalie (Victoria) and Dave, Sharron, Naomi, Charlotte, and Nick (California). Bruce is predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Muriel (nee Lawson) Heyland; his older brother, Dr. Peter Heyland (husband to Margaret Heyland). Born in Toronto on December 7, 1936, Bruce attended Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute and University College at the University of Toronto graduating ultimately with an M.B.A in 1962. Bruce had a distinguished career in commercial real estate starting with T. Eaton Co and taking on progressively larger roles until becoming President of Hammerson Canada from which he retired in 1996. Bruce's love of the arts, especially the ballet and opera, lead him to pivotal roles in the arts world in Toronto, including the board of the National Ballet of Canada and as Chair of the Mississauga Living Arts Centre. In his retirement years, Bruce turned to nurturing his own artistic talents and took up sculpture and drawing. Bruce was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2010, but with help from Donna, they slowed the progression of the disease for a time and enjoyed family life at home and at the cottage in Muskoka. The family expresses deep gratitude to the staff at Sagecare who showed much compassion and tenderness toward Bruce after he moved there in 2021. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Bruce's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. A celebration of life for Bruce will be held at The Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club, 141 Wilson Avenue, Toronto, on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, from 2-4 p.m.

My condolences to the Heyland family. I had the pleasure of working with Bruce over 30 years ago when I was new to the shopping centre business. He was patient, respectful and I recall he had a terrific sense of humour. As a young, green, female in the industry, he was kind and encouraging. He was a real gentleman.
My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

Donna, I am so sorry for your loss and that we have lost touch with each other over these past years. I also experienced Gerry's passing from dementia (and old age) more than two years ago. The dementia journey taught me a lot about myself. It was difficult but not without its merits. If you have any wish to re-engage our friendship, I can be reached at 613-339-3219. Afternoons or evenings only. I sleep till noon. I have fond memories of LRY days and the first year at Vic. Please share my condolences with your family. Hugs. Valerie

As I think of Uncle Bruce´s passing, my immediate thoughts go to the family gatherings at Muskoka Rest. Especially the pitch & putt golf "course" Bruce worked on for endless hours. A warm summer day with a drink in one hand and a club in the other... no better way to spend time together. All our love to Donna, Beth, Les, Tim, Jenn and the grandchildren.

I am so sorry to learn about the death of Bruce Heyland. When I worked at the National Ballet of Canada, Bruce was the Chair of the Corporate Campaign that I supported as Manager of Corporate Development. I learned so much about integrity, respect, collegiality and having fun doing what you believe in. It was during Bruce's tenure that we created the Golden Shoe Award for Corporate Fundraising success. It created alot of energy, funds and fun. My thoughts go to the family during this time of loss.

Uncle Bruce was the cool uncle! He had a great laugh and a twinkling smile, was unerringly kind and just a good, strong, decent role model of a man. That he was stricken with Alzheimer´s is a cruel irony, but he bore it with dignity. I will remember him as a vigorous and imaginative creator and my uncle. All our love to Donna, Beth and Tim, Hannah, Grace, Thomas and Isabel. Geoff and Lynn Heyland
