Edward LONG Obituary

At home in Toronto, on May 30, 2024. Predeceased by Lianne (née Irving), his wife of 44 years; parents, Emma and Herb; and four siblings, Bill, Donna, Mary, and John. Survived by daughters, Suzanne, Megan (Jamie Keating), and Emily (Mike Harrison); and grandchildren, Jeremy and Natalie Foote. Having graduated from Trinity College School, Eddie attended Western University before his career in hockey took precedence, playing semi-professionally in Quebec, with a draft option to the Detroit Red Wings. His athleticism and love of the outdoors led him toward many other sports, enjoying longstanding memberships skiing with the family at Caledon Ski Club, and playing tennis and platform tennis at The Badminton & Racquet Club. Eddie's career as agency representative for various Quebec clothing manufacturers brought him success in the '60s and '70s, being one of the first to create private label clothing for major retailers in Canada and the US. Laterally, purchasing a business which manufactured and sold legal and clerical robes, D. Shuter Robes became Eddie's late career passion. A salesman by nature, Eddie eventually served as Board chair of the Canadian Professional Sales Association. Retirement from Toronto was to the Caledon area, where moving from their original "hobby farm" to a larger working farm in Terra Cotta, Eddie and Lianne made a full life of gardening, political activism, friends, family, and restoring and maintaining a larger property and an old historic stone house. Later years brought Eddie back to the city, where he enjoyed walking, dining, travelling, his clubs, friends new and old, and family. He never slowed down and always had time for a chat. Family would like to thank the kind staff and tenants at 9 Deer Park Crescent for enjoying Eddie's recent company and acknowledge his much-loved extended Long family nieces, nephews and cousins, of which there were so many. Service to be held at Grace Church On-the Hill on Thursday, September 5th, at 1 p.m.

My deepest condolences to Edwards family. May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief. I worked at Edward's place when he lived in Erin up on Wellington Rd. I was hired to help maintain the beautiful piece of property he owned. I truly loved being there, especially, the days that Edward and I would work together on projects. He always had stories to tell and had a great sense of humor. We worked hard but had fun and man Edward could swing a sledgehammer. I truly missed him after he sold the property. We'd keep in touch couple times a year, especially birthdays. I couldn't believe when I read of his passing. God Bless you Edward. I always loved this picture of him in his element.

So very sad to hear that Eddie´s light has gone out. I always enjoyed Eddie´s company, his stories, his humour and most of all his generosity. Morley and I lived in his guest house for six months in 2009 whilst we were building our house in Hillsburgh. We shared countless meals, good wine and camaraderie....it was a magical time I will never forget. Eddie was a gentleman and just plain good fun. I´ll miss him.

Eddie was a dear friend, especially after we both attended T.C.S. We played opposite ends on the football team, but it was later that we reunited often at his country home and farm. He was very attentive in our mutual communication especially since I lived in the states and taveled to Toronto to see him. I viewed him as one of my closest friends......Russ Robb, Concord, Mass, USA

Eddie and my brother Roger Proctor, were life long friends in school and onwards and as I was 10 years younger, looked up to them and all their antics growing up. Eddie has always been one of Rogers friends that stuck in my mind, a wonderful and kind man, not to be forgotten.

I am so sad to hear this news. Eddie was always full of life planning the next adventure. I can only imagine the trouble dad (Michael Burns) and Eddie have gotten into over their lifetime!

The place in Caledon was absolutely beautiful. They did a fantastic job with it.

It was a great honor meeting Eddie. My mother and I only knew him for 8 years but those were great. My mother and Eddie became good friends and spent many a day on outings or just hanging out. When I visited Toronto mother and I spent hours doing things with Eddie. He was such a funny and loving man. We will miss you tremendously!

Eddie was a force of nature. He was tireless and dedicated to his passions of family and community. It is hard to believe that energy has faded with his passing. We admired his spirit, his care for others and his commitment to helping making life´s path easier for so many.
With regret and sadness,
