EILEEN MITCHELL Q.C THOMAS

EILEEN THOMAS Obituary

THOMAS, EILEEN MITCHEL, Q.C.
FORMER LEGAL COUNSEL, NATIONAL CAPITAL COMMISSION Peacefully at Villa Marguerite , Ottawa on April 1, 2007, after a long decline from Alzheimer 's disease. Born on August 13, 1916, and raised in Cobalt, Ontario, Eileen was one of only four women in the class of 1940 at Osgoode Hall. She went on to a distinguished legal career in private practice, as a family court judge, and as Legal Counsel for the NCC from 1963 to 1979. Eileen was a mentor to many young lawyers, and gave generously of her time, talents and money to the Chelsea Club, the Anglican Church, Zonta International, International Commission of Jurists, International Federation of Women Lawyers, many arts and environmental organizations, and her neighbourhood community association in Manor Park. Wife of the late Homer Thomas (d. 1997), Eileen will be deeply missed by her daughters Barbara Kerson ( G u elph) and Margot Cameron (Ottawa) , her son-in-law Brian Cameron , her grandchildren Addie and Eric Kerson, and Anna and Nicola Cameron, and countless other friends and colleagues who remember her energy, determination and irrepressible good spirits. Our thanks to the staff of the 6th Floor of Villa Marguerite (particularly Lise Cadieux) for their compassionate care over many years. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at St. John's Anglican Church, Elgin St., Ottawa, on Thursday, April 12 at 3:00 pm, to be followed by a reception at the Chelsea Club, 236 Metcalfe St.
