Eli KASSNER Obituary

ELI KASSNER On August 23, 2018, after a brief illness, Eli Kassner passed away peacefully at the Baycrest Apotex Centre in Toronto, Ontario. He was 94. Keeping him in loving memory are his daughters, Annick Mitchell, Danielle Kassner (Guillermo Perez-Quer); his stepson, Stephen Halman (Rita Janzen); and his grandsons, Jacob Mitchell, Benjamin Mitchell and Gabriel Perez-Kassner. He was predeceased (2017) by Ann, his wife and dearest companion of many years. He will be greatly missed by his extensive family of friends, colleagues and students in the international world of the classical guitar. He was born in Vienna, Austria, and as a 15-year-old left for Israel in 1939, where he met his first wife, Noémi, the mother of his children. Following his brother's call to move to Canada in 1951, he made a name for himself as a multi-talented artist, becoming most noted for his contributions to the teaching of the classical guitar at the Toronto Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music. An accomplished performance artist himself, he also founded the Toronto Guitar Society in 1959. Under his leadership his vision of holding an international guitar festival and performance competition in Toronto became a reality with the establishment of the Toronto Guitar Festival in 1975, which has since served as the model for subsequent festivals worldwide. Among many other honours, Eli was the recipient of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012) and the Order of Canada (2016) in recognition of his life's work. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Apotex Centre and his caregivers, Chromy Magalona and Lourdes Ferrer. Visitation will be on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. with a farewell service to follow at 2:00 p.m. Both events will take place at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Baycrest Foundation.

My sincere condolences to all of Eli's friends and family. I studied briefly with Eli around 1974-76. If my memory serves me correctly...LOL...Lynne Gangbar and Alan Torok were there around the same time. I always loved Eli's enthusiasm and encouragement. Those early experiences with Eli put me on a path to a lifetime career in music production and distribution. He was one of the great classical guitar teachers of all time. I only recently heard of his passing while talking to my friend, Grant MacNeill, owner of the 12th Fret guitar shop. I was looking for a Renaissance lute and it so happened that Grant had bought Eli's lute at the estate sale. I am now the proud owner of this lovely instrument, and thrilled to have a connection with my first guitar teacher!

In 1956, when I was fifteen, Eli and another guitarist came to my parents' house to sample two Edgar Mönch guitars recently arrived from Germany. That evening is etched in my memory and sowed some seeds for my subsequent career as a luthier.
In later years he always supported and encouraged me in my work. Thank you Eli. Rest in peace.

Forever grateful for your time you gave me.

Eli Kassner changed my life. I was his student, and then his friend, since I was 14 years old. Thanks to Eli I met and performed for all the top classical guitarists in the world. Dear Eli you set me off on quite a journey all those years ago and I was honoured to speak about you last Saturday. It was touching to see your coffin lowered on top of dear Ann's...something you had apparently planned years ago so you could rest together in beautiful Mt Pleasant Cemetery.
Thank you for sharing your passion for our instrument, all the extra coaching you gave me and for making Toronto such an epicentre with those Int'l Guitar Festivals and the TO Guitar Society that you founded.
Condolences to your two amazing daughters and to Ann's family too. Eli your legacy lives on in all of us who were fortunate to have known and loved you.

Very sad news of the death of our wonderful dear friend Eli Kassner. I know that all of us involved with the guitar, who had the great pleasure of knowing him, have many delightful memories of times together. He really WAS the guitar in Canada - a true institution.
