Elizabeth Jane "Libbie" BAKER

Elizabeth BAKER Obituary

BAKER, Elizabeth 'Libbie' Jane (nee Kennedy)
June 4, 1927 - November 3, 2014 As a result of Alzheimer's disease.

Libbie is survived by her husband, Robert; daughters, Lisa (Conrad) Boyce and Lianne (Larry) Borsuk; step-sons, Guy (Linda) Baker and Scott Baker; grandchildren, Alida (Trevor) Craig, Jack (Heather) Wesselo and Ian (Hayley Lochner) Borsuk and great-grandchildren, Declan and Callum Craig and Adelaide and Benjamin Wesselo.

Born and raised in Montreal, Libbie's youthful passions included her relationship with her cousins, playing the piano, singing and acting. With her first husband, Paul Christensen, she moved to Halifax in 1952 where she continued her involvement with community theatre and also sang with the Royal Canadian Navy band. Libbie's strong sense of self and her many talents led to hosting, with Jim Bennett, the CBC Halifax television productions Look in on Libbie and Home Base from 1960 to 1967. Through these years she also appeared on the national television CBC shows of Front Page Challenge, Live a Borrowed Life, Country Canada, and covered The Queen's Plate and more. She co-hosted the CBC coverage of the opening of Expo 67 in Montreal and was an interviewer on the first TV satellite program to go around the world. She was most proud of her association with the American program to land an astronaut on the moon. She was one of the first two women to do a simulated moon landing at Grumman Engineering, Bethpage, Long Island. During this time, she continued her interest in flight by obtaining her private pilot's license.

After moving with her daughters to Toronto in 1967, Libbie joined the public relations department at the T. Eaton Co. and continued her involvement in television as a panelist on Newsmaker's Match. Libbie received her APR (Accredited in Public Relations) certification which led to her position teaching PR at Humber College in the 1970's. Married to Bob in 1972 they enjoyed many years of travel, and golfing at Lambton Golf Club.

Diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2003, Libbie was helped by her strong Christian faith through the early years, but this devastating disease gradually robbed her of her unique personality and a wonderful lifetime of memories of treasured family and friends.

Loved dearly by her family, she will be always missed.

We are very grateful for the care Libbie received at West Park Long Term Care in Toronto for the last eight years.

Donations gratefully accepted, in her memory, to your local Alzheimer's Association.
Remembrances can be emailed to [email protected] or [email protected].

There will be a private family interment.
