Elizabeth EDWARDS Obituary

EDWARDS, Elizabeth Gordon
(1925 - 2013)

Elizabeth Gordon Edwards died peacefully on Thursday February 21st at the Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre. She is survived by her three sisters Mary Elizabeth Hertz, Ann Stewart and Janet Cameron White and by twenty-one nieces and nephews. A lifelong resident of Ottawa Elizabeth was proud of the role played by the Edwards family in the history of the Ottawa Valley. She was also interested in the Meighen family connections in Perth, Ontario. Elizabeth was a committed environmentalist, a knowledgeable amateur bird watcher and lifelong supporter of creative initiatives. As a dedicated volunteer of United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Elizabeth was an active participant in the activities of both the Ottawa and Provincial Associations. Her interest in United Nations children's projects took her to Africa, South American and Asian on several occasions as an observer. Elizabeth generously supported the creative arts including National Art Centre presentations, the Stratford Festival, the Shaw Festival and local initiatives. The arts held a special place in Elizabeth's life. She attended the theatre, performances by dance companies and musical events of all kinds. As she was bilingual she was able to take advantage of the rich cultural climate of Ottawa. She was especially interested in the development of young artists in the community. Elizabeth collected a significant number of Inuit prints, mainly depiction of birds in Northern Canada. She has gifted her personal collection of pictorial 'bird' art to the Ottawa Art Gallery. Elizabeth cared for her Mother, Mary Elizabeth Edwards (nee Currie) during the final years of her life and until her death in 1996. Elizabeth will be remembered as a philanthropist, a keen observer of Canada's literary evolution and a confirmed environmentalist. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Connor) for a Memorial Gathering on Thursday from 12-2 p.m. In memory of Elizabeth please send a donation to the Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre Foundation.
