Elizabeth GRAY Obituary

ELIZABETH BINKS GRAY Elizabeth Binks Gray died October 25, 2023, at Toronto General Hospital. Admitted in early September due to a heart attack, she was then diagnosed with advanced lung cancer, and died surrounded by family and supported with extraordinary compassion and care by the team at TGH. Born April 26, 1937, in Toronto to George Binks of Lachine, Quebec, and Enid Watts Binks of Letterston, Wales. She graduated from the University of Toronto, having spent much of her time at The Varsity student newspaper. It was there that began her life with John Gray. After marrying, the two young journalists and adventurers lived in London for five years, taking time to travel in Europe, first on bicycles and then in a VW van. They moved back to Montreal in 1965, and subsequently lived in Ottawa, Toronto, London and Moscow before returning to Toronto for the last stop on the tour in 1994. An accomplished journalist, Elizabeth always loved radio best, and was involved in seminal CBC radio programming from the 1970s to the 2000s. She hosted Cross Country Check-Up, As it Happens, worked at Morningside, produced documentaries for the Sunday Report, and was awarded four ACTRA Awards throughout her career. John, her beloved partner in all things, died in 2020. She leaves her children, Colin, Rachel and Joshua; daughters-in-law, Laurie and Heather; and grandchildren, Madeleine, Flannery, Declan, Sebastian and Griffin. Elizabeth Gray attracted and surrounded herself with other smart, powerful, interesting women, many of whom considered her a mentor, and many of whom became dear friends. We all take great pleasure in the thought she is off to find our dad. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Canadian Journalists for Free Expression or Working for Change.

I just learned of the passing of Elizabeth, so sad to hear this news! many fond memories of Elizabeth who was a kind and gentle soul but could be as tough as nails. Her work exposing the truths around mental health and poverty, Elizabeth and John were great supporters of Voices from the Street, they will both be fondly remembered at Working for Change they shared so much with us. I also served on the board with Elizabeth and her Nora McCabe they taught me well! i was so hoping for one last lunch with you, i hope you find John on your way. My deepest condolences to Rachel and all of the Gray family.

Hers was a memorable radio voice. We had a few telephone conversations, as well. My sympathy to her family and many friends.
