Elizabeth SAUL Obituary

ELIZABETH PATRICIA SAUL Elizabeth Patricia (Pat) Saul was born October 31, 1936, and raised in the West End of Toronto. Eldest daughter of Duff and Gord Chalmers and sister to Karen Ann, she attended Keele Street Public School and Humberside Collegiate. Pat received her BA from Victoria College at the University of Toronto where she met the love of her life, John Shannon Saul. After marrying in 1962, they began adventures that would lead to seven years in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where she completed her Masters in Education. In Dar she made lasting friendships and gave birth to her two children, Nick and Jo. Upon returning to Toronto, Pat remained active in supporting the liberation struggles in Southern Africa. She found work at the North York Board of Education where she would spend her career (but for a year spent in Mozambique writing curriculum for the Ministry of Education), first as a history and global issues teacher and later as department head. While at Westview Centennial she helped launch Promoting Excellence and Success Beyond Limits, where she served as Chair of the Board and continued her lifelong work of advocating for students in marginalized communities. In her final years of teaching, Pat was seconded to York University to teach Urban Education. After winning the honour of North York's "Woman of the Year" upon her retirement in 1995, Pat continued her work in the Jane and Finch community, as well as going on to co-found Word-Play, a community-based program to promote the joy of reading and writing housed at Type Books in Toronto. Along with her commitment to activist work, Pat also made time for cultivating her long-lasting friendships, contributing to three separate book clubs, and, most importantly, helping to nurture her four incredible grandchildren. Her legacy is one of kindness, generosity, community-building and connection-making. Her fight for social justice was grounded in a genuine curiosity for and love of people. She died peacefully at home on September 16, 2022, surrounded by the family she loved and who loved her deeply. She leaves behind her beloved husband, John, her kids Nick and Jo, her daughter-in-law Andi (Curtis), and her grandchildren Ben, Clare, Quinn and Charlie. She is predeceased by her son-in-law David Mills. Sincere gratitude to Dr. Sacher and the incredible staff at Princess Margaret Hospital and to Dr. Melissa Melnitzer and the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to Success Beyond Limits. A celebration of Pat's remarkable life will be held November 6th, 3:30-6:30 p.m. in the gymnasium of Trinity St. Paul's, United Church Toronto.

Pat was a great leader, compassionate community builder, principled advocate and warm individual. I enjoyed working with Pat on the board of Success Beyond Limits over ten years. Her passion for education and building strong communities for youth was infectious and inspired me to stay committed to this work. Pat was also a very warm person and caring with people. She always would ask about my family and take interest in how we were doing. As an anecdote on the impact she would have on people, she met my young son (6 years old) a couple of times and he always very much enjoyed the interaction and was drawn to her. We had seen Pat just a couple of weeks before she passed at an SBL event. When I told my son that Pat had passed away. He thought about it and then told his sister what had happened (4 years old) and he said "Pat was my friend". I'll never forget that, and it shows me how Pat was able to connect with people in a special way. Condolences to Pat's family and friends for their loss and we'll all be left with good memories and the positive legacy she left for us.

I have the opportunity to work with Pat on many community initiatives and she was committed to the community she works with. I was also the recipient of her support when I attended York university. It is a great loss to her family and her loved once. My sincere condolences to her family and may God be with you through this difficult time.

Pat's years at A.Y.Jackson were marked with great leadership in the History department, and the notable teacher exchange visit with China.
Her smile and her steadfast focus on the immediate are unforgettable.

The Success Beyond Limits (SBL), Board and staff were deeply saddened to learn of Pat's passing and express our condolences to her family. Pat was a founding Board member of SBL, a former Board chair, and a life long friend of SBL, sitting on committees even after she retired from the Board.
Pat was also a very dear friend of mine. I will miss our regular visits on her balcony or in the sunroom, talking about books, the education system, our families and SBL. We met several decades ago, when she was my teacher at A.Y. Jackson and lost touch after I graduated, We reconnected about six years ago when she searched for me and we have been dear friends since then. She encouraged me to join the SBL Board and has been a mentor to me throughout. I am one of the many former students whose life she has greatly enriched.

Mrs. Saul was simply the best teacher I had at Westview Centennial secondary school and arguably the best teacher ever any where. She was so loving, kind, and generous. She always went out of her way to help her students while remaining professional. She left an indelible mark in my life. She will be dearly missed. My condolences to her family.

Patricia Saul was a wonderfully inventive and committed colleague at the York University Faculty of Education. She taught us, me, much with her rich pedagogical imagination and professional wisdom. She will be remembered for her spirited engagement on behalf to education, for her many contributions to community out-reach, and for her very warm, knowing smile letting you know that everything would be alright. My sincere condolences to her family at this time of mourning.

John, Nick and Jo.

I´m sorry to learn that Pat has left us. She was an inspirational beacon of commitment, courage, intelligence, kindness and calm. One always knew things were going to work out when she was in the room; she had an uncanny ability to see the path to the right thing to do in the most complicated situations. It is hard to think of a better person to model oneself after.

Thanks for everything, Pat.
