Ella NEWEL Obituary
ELLA MARGARET NEWEL (nee Moderwell) 1921 - 2022 Stratford-born Ella (aka Lolla, Trix, Management, Mumsie) was laid to rest on May 7, 2022, beside her beloved Desmond (2005) in Toronto's Mount Pleasant Cemetery. She died peacefully in Hamilton on May 4, two days after her 101st birthday. For the past decade, Ella received excellent care at both Meighen Retirement Residence, Toronto and Queens Garden LTC, Hamilton. Loved and admired by those who knew her, Ella is especially missed by her sister, Kathleen (Kay) Moderwell, St. Andrew's Residence, Chatham; son, David Newel (Andréa Jarmai), Toronto; and daughter, Mary Newel (Chris Aylott), Hamilton. Fond aunt to extended Coates and Sellers families. Ella was the first-born of Mary Hughine (nee Clark) and Robert Andrew Moderwell, grandson of Perth County Sheriff, Robert Moderwell. Bleak economic times necessitated a 1934 move to the maternal home (now Heritage House) in Blenheim, Ontario. The success of her mother's gift shop enabled Ella to attend London's Western University and suffer through library school in Toronto. A gifted contralto, Ella joined the Don Wright Chorus (CFPL radio) to round out a library career at Western. Wise budgeting ensured that she could foster her love of travel (Mexico, 1949). Marriage to Desmond Newel in 1952 brought a move to Leaside, Toronto and there Ella flourished for 60 years, excelling as spouse, homemaker, mother, gardener, travel companion and introvert. She wrote the book on DIY. Memorial donations to Indspire, Kids Help Phone, food banks or environmental causes appreciated. Memories of such a lady are, indeed, a blessing.
