Ellen TRIM Obituary
ELLEN JOYCE TRIM 1930 - 2022 With sadness and love, we announce the passing of our mother and nana, E. Joyce Trim, on October 26th, 2022. Joyce (predeceased by husband, John) will be missed by her daughter, Heather (Stew); son David (Joanna); and grandchildren Kate, Court, Nicole and Stephen. Joyce was born in Toronto on November 22, 1930, and moved to Montreal at a young age with sister, Geraldine, and parents, Ivy and Gerry. A proud Montrealer, Joyce loved her Town of Mount Royal neighbourhood and especially her years at Town of Mount Royal H.S. A strong athlete with a competitive streak to match, she loved sports and excelled at many. Basketball was her favourite, only later surpassed by tennis and curling. After graduating from McGill University's Phys-Ed program (Class of '51), Joyce began teaching kids, mostly new to the country or otherwise from families working hard to enhance their own pathways. Believing sports and the outdoors added to life experience, she taught and coached enthusiastically and always stood up for her students. A favourite story was her coaxing money from the school principal to transport her soccer team to 'away' games without missing too much class time. Other schools used hired buses but her team navigated the many public transit connections. Known for her smile and laughter, Joyce was also determined, resourceful and occasionally politely persistent. The money was eventually provided, and Joyce piled her team into taxis. Joyce and John married in '57 and shortly after a career move brought them to Toronto. Children soon arrived and Joyce focused on raising her kids, all the while also committing her time to many local community organizations and several municipal election campaigns. Busy as she was, new Toronto friendships flourished with Cathy, Anne, Mern, Ruth, Mary, Barb and others. Cherished Montreal relationships and lots of laughter also lived on with fifty-plus years of bi-annual reunions with the Hams, O'Connors, Cresswells, and Hickeys. Joyce was fun, a good friend to many and a great host. Mom loved walking the parks in Toronto with her dogs, spending time at the farm in Heathcote, and travelling with John whenever they could. Most of all she loved her family - sometimes quietly, sometimes stoically, but always proudly. She will be missed! Our family has celebrated Joyce's well-lived life.
